Sep 30, 2008 $1000 Records, Blue Note, Impulse, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay, Prestige, RCA, Riverside
Time to catch up on some of the items we’ve been watching on eBay:
We predicted this record would sell for a high price, and it did: Lee Morgan, Sextet, Blue Note 1541. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing in VG++ condition. Price: $1,325
Another high-end Blue Note: Curtis Fuller, Bone & Bari, Blue Note 1572. This was an original pressing in M- condition. Price: $676.77
That Joe Newman LP with the Andy Warhol cover went for a bit less this week than it did a few weeks ago: Joe Newman, I’m Still Swinging, RCA 1198. Price: $57.77
Remember that Zoot record that was priced at just $30 a few hours ago. It wound up selling for $337.90: Zoot Sims, Zoot!, Riverside228.

eBay Today, Sept. 30
Sep 30, 2008 Blue Note, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay, Prestige, Riverside
It’s another VERY slow day for high-end jazz collectibles on eBay. Is there something going on that we’re not aware of? Anyway, here are some interesting items of note that are closing today:
Joe Newman, I’m Still Swinging, RCA 1198. This is the one with the Andy Warhol cover. As we noted in an earlier post, this sold recently on eBay for $200. This one’s current price is $16.50.
Art Taylor, Taylor’s Tenors, Prestige New Jazz 8219. This is an original pressing with the purple label and it seems to be in nice condition. Offered by Atomic Records, which is one of the larger jazz dealers on eBay.
Zoot Sims, Zoot!, Riverside 228. This is an original pressing with the white label in nice condition. Current price is only around $30. That’s pretty low. It’ll be interesting to see how high it goes up.
Hank Mobley, The Turnaround, Blue Note 4186. This is an original pressing with the New York USA label.
Oh, and we almost forgot our own listings:
The Complete Lee Morgan Fifties Blue Note Sessions, Mosaic MQ6-162.
Miles Davis, The Complete Plugged Nickel Sessions, Mosaic MQ10-158.

And The Winner Is . . .
Sep 29, 2008 Free Collectibles, Jazz Vinyl
Actually, no one. Two weeks ago we ran a contest to give away a free record. The instructions were simple: All you had to do was write a comment on this post. No one did. However, in the interest of full disclosure, the collectible we were giving away wasn’t the most exciting, an OJC copy of The Dual Role of Bob Brookmeyer. Perhaps no one was interested. So, we’ll do it again this week, run a contest to give away a free collectible, and we’ll offer something a little better. And if no one responds this time, perhaps we’ll think of another format. In this case, we are going to give away the Bob Brookmeyer LP to our reader Rudolf A. Flinterman because he has been the most prolific and consistent commenter since we’ve re-launched the site. So, Rudolf, congratulations on winning the free record. I’ll send you a separate email to work out the details. For everyone else, keep an eye on the site today and tomorrow for our next attempt to give away a jazz collectible. Hopefully, it will be something that someone will want.

Upcoming on eBay, Sept. 29
Sep 29, 2008 Blue Note, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay, Prestige
I haven’t posted since Friday, so I took a look ahead to see what’s interesting on eBay today, just to catch up while I work on other aspects of the site. It’s actually a fairly slow day for high-end collectibles, but there are a few, mostly Blue Notes. Here are some to check out:
Hank Mobley and His All Stars, Blue Note 1544. This is a nice copy with the West 63rd Street address, which I assume is an original pressing. I have a copy of Sonny Rollins Volume 1, Blue Note 1542, with the Lexington Avenue address, and that’s the highest number I’ve seen for Lexington Avenue. Perhaps one of the Blue Note experts out there can weigh in on this. Anyway, this Mobley LP is being offered by Euclid Records, a reputable dealer and, as of this posting, is still reasonably priced at about $120.

Today on eBay, September 26
Sep 26, 2008 Blue Note, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay, Verve
Here are some other interesting items on eBay today. This first one is a beauty: Lee Morgan, Sextet, Blue Note 1541. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing in very nice condition. The current price is $360, but it should go for quite a bit more. Our friends at Euclid Records have a few nice Blue Note originals selling today, including this one: Jimmy Smith, New Sound – New Star, Blue Note 1512. This one is an original Lexington Avenue pressing and is already more than $120. Here’s a seller with a large number of items, including this one: Art Blakey, A Night at Birdland Volume Two, Blue Note 1522. This is an original Lexington Avenue in VG condition. Price now is $56. When you look at this seller’s other items, make sure you check the condition. Finally, here’s one I like a lot, but doesn’t seem to be generating too much interest, based on the price and lack of bidding: Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Duke Ellington Songbook, Verve 4010-4. This is the boxed set edition, including four records and the booklet. Current price is $19.99.

Looking For Anything on Impulse?
Sep 26, 2008 Impulse, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay
If you’re looking for any records on the Impulse label, there’s a seller on eBay now who seems to be selling a very good portion of the catalog. Here are a couple of examples: Charles Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Impulse A-54. This is selling more more than $40 at this point. John Coltrane, Ballads, Impulse A-32. This is now at $61. These are being sold by a dealer in Italy, who says they are the collection of a jazz journalist. If you click on either of these items, then view “seller’s other items” you can see the complete list, which looks to be 75 records total. Each of them seems to have a start price of $35. These auctions start closing in about five hours. Sorry for the late notice on this, but I’ve been away a couple of days, and now it’s the wee small hours here in New York and I can’t sleep so I figured I’d see what was interesting on eBay and I found this.

Mosiac Boxed Sets (Our Own) For Sale
Sep 23, 2008 Blue Note, Boxed Sets, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay
As always, we try to keep an eye on interesting collectibles on eBay. We noticed last week that a couple of the nicer Mosaic boxed sets — actually, all of the Mosaics are nice — were available in nice condition and sold for pretty high prices: Lee Morgan, The Complete Fifties Blue Note Sessions, Mosaic MQ6-162, sold for $520 and Miles Davis, The Complete Miles Davis Plugged Nickel, Mosaic MQ10-158, sold for $565.35. Now, we are a big fan of the Mosaics, and have been collecting them since the company first launched. However, we are downsizing and trying to drive traffic to the site and trying to get some attention, so we thought, hmm, here’s a good opportunity to see what happens when we put some really good items on eBay. So we did. We put up our mint copies of these same records, The Complete Blue Note Lee Morgan Fifties Sessions and The Complete Miles Davis Plugged Nickel. Both are on eBay now and both have a start price of $300. Let’s see what happens.

Sonny Clark, Dex, Brubeck, Bird, All For A Price
Sep 22, 2008 10-Inch LPs, Blue Note, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay
Here’s an update on some items we’ve been watching:
We had pointed out the other day that there was a copy of Sonny Clark, Cool Struttin’, Blue Note 1588 that could be had for a buy-it-now price of $3,750. Shortly after that post, someone bought it for that price. We never realized we had such power.
Here’s an interesting item that raises a question: Dexter Gordon, Daddy Plays the Horn, Bethlehem 36. This was a promo copy with the record in M- condition and the cover VG. It sold for $291.56. What’s interesting is that the seller notes that many of the available copies of this record have the promo stamp. Sure enough, I looked at my copy and there it was. Does anyone out there have any idea why this would be the case? If you do, please post it as a comment.
I did a post the other day on the market for Dave Brubeck collectibles. Here’s one that went for a higher price than expected: Dave Brubeck, Jazz At Oberlin, Fantasy 3-11. This was an original 10-inch LP with red vinyl in nice condition. Price: $50
Another one we were watching: Charlie Parker, Dial 203. This was an original 10-inch LP in what seemed like VG+ condition. Price: $393.80
We’ll be posting again later today, and we’ll be putting some of our own stuff on eBay this week. Nice stuff, indeed.

Cool Struttin’, For A Price
Sep 19, 2008 10-Inch LPs, Blue Note, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay
Interested in a near mint copy of Sonny Clark’s Cool Struttin’, Blue Note 1588? There’s a copy on eBay now for a buy-it-now price of $3,750. It you want to take a chance and bid on it, the price is already more than $2,200. Another item I’m watching is this one: Charlie Parker, Dial 203. This is an original 10-inch pressing, and it seems to be in nice condition. I’m a sucker for these 10-inchers. This one is still under $200 for now, although we don’t expect it to stay there.

How About Brubeck Collectibles?
Sep 19, 2008 Album Covers, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay
I’m going through all of the old Web posts and newsletters from 2004 and 2005 and updating them and putting them on the site. I ran into an item, which I’ll post in a second, in which a reader asked about our Price Guides and why we didn’t include any records from Dave Brubeck. The answer, basically, is that Brubeck records are not really among the most highly pursued collectibles and don’t normally get top dollar. So, on eBay this week, I was caught by surprise by the price of this record: Dave Brubeck Quartet, Jazz Red, Hot and Cool, Columbia 699. This record sold for $160.50. Apparently what makes this rare (and valuable) is that it’s an original white label promo that was released as part of a joint promotion with Helena Rubenstein, promoting the lipstick worn by the model on the cover. Generally promo copies don’t make all that much difference in value, but apparently this one turns this Brubeck record into a collectible of note. As for the original correspondence about the Price Guides and Brubeck and collectibles, I’m reposting those as comments to this post. Please post your own comments if you’d like.

Catching Up With Some Interesting Collectibles
Sep 18, 2008 Blue Note, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay, Prestige, Riverside, Verve
Here are some interesting results from some records we’ve been watching on eBay:
Red Garland, All Kinds of Weather, Prestige 7148. This is an original yellow label pressing with the New Jersey address in M- condition. Price: $385. I’ve never quite figured out which Red Garland records sell for the highest prices, and why. So, if anyone out there has the answer, please post a comment.
Here’s an interesting one: Paul Chambers, Whims of Chambers, Blue Note 1534. What’s interesting is that this was not an original pressing: The original pressing on this has the Lexington Avenue address, and this copy had the West 63rd street address. So it was not original and it was only in VG condition, yet it still sold for $124.50.
Ben Webster, Soulville, Verve 8274. This was an original pressing with the trumpeter logo in M- condition and sold for $190.09. That’s a pretty nice price for a Ben Webster on Verve. This was sold by

Any Comments?
Sep 18, 2008 Features
A couple of days ago we sent out an email to all of our newsletter subscribers from a few years ago. It was interesting in that most of the people that replied, did so via email rather than going to the Web site and posting a comment there. We are trying to get people used to the idea of commenting directly on the site because we believe it’s a great way to interact directly with other collectors, and to get your questions answered. So we’re going to take the liberty of taking some of the email we’ve received and posting them as comments on this post. For those of you who are new to the site, all you have to do to reach out to fellow collectors is click on the “comments” link above and write away.
eBaying, Today, September 18
Sep 18, 2008 10-Inch LPs, Blue Note, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay, Prestige
We’re working on a post to catch up on some of the interesting items we’ve been watching on eBay this week. In the meantime, here are a few items that are closing today that are worth viewing:
Our friends at Euclid Records have this nice item: Paul Chambers Quintet, Blue Note 1564. This is in beautiful condition and, as of now is going for $660.
Here’s another rare Blue Note: Johnny Griffin, The Congregation, Blue Note 1580. This is the original pressing, with the nice cover by Andy Warhol.
Finally, take a look at this one: Jimmy Raney Ensemble, Prestige New Jazz 1103. This is a 10-inch LP and the condition is not great. It’s from a reputable dealer and he has priced it at $99.99 minimum. I’m watching this to see if it sells at all, based on the condition and the start price.
Keep an eye on the site: We’ll be doing a few posts today on some of the interesting eBay auctions that closed earlier this week.

Win A Free Record
Sep 14, 2008 Free Collectibles, Jazz Vinyl, Prestige
When we were doing the Jazz Collector newsletter regularly, we would often give away free records to subscribers. Well we’re back now with the Jazz Collector Blog, and we’ve decided to resurrect the largesse. So, we’re giving away one copy of this record: The Dual Role of Bob Brookeyer, Prestige 7066. This is a limited edition OJC classic and the LP is still sealed. We will provide the record with free shipping to the winner. To enter the contest, all you have to do is write a comment to this post, answering the following question: What is your favorite LP on the Prestige label? That’s all you have to do to participate: Comment on this post and we will put you name in a pool and draw the winner in two weeks. We’ll announce the winner on this site at the end of the day on Sunday, September 28. Good luck, and we look forward to seeing your comments. One interesting thing about this record: It differs from the first pressing, in that it includes two extra tracks that were not available on the original New York yellow label Prestige.

A Few More Items for The Weekend
Sep 14, 2008 10-Inch LPs, Blue Note, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay, Prestige
I promised to point out a few more records and sellers on eBay this weekend, so here goes:
Dexter Gordon, Daddy Plays the Horn, Bethelehem 36. The condition of the vinyl is nice, but the cover is just VG, according to the dealer. Price is pretty low at this point.
John Coltrane, Blue Train, Blue Note 1577. This is an original pressing in pretty nice shape. Price is already approaching $400.
This seller has nice nice 10-inch LPs, including this one: Max Roach Quartet Featuring Hank Mobley, Debut 3.
Finally, we’re back selling records on eBay as AJDoctor. Here’s one of the items we put up this weekend: John Coltrane, Wheelin’ and Dealin’, Prestige 7131.

A Weekend With Jackie, Basie, Warhol, Monk
Sep 12, 2008 Album Covers, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay, Prestige, Riverside
As promised, here are a few more records to keep an eye on this weekend, as well as some sellers who have interesting items.
Jackie McLean, A Long Drink of the Blues, Prestige New Jazz 8253. I‘ve always loved the second side of this LP, with Jackie in a quartet setting doing Embraceable You, I Cover the Waterfront and These Foolish things. This particular copy of the record is an original, but not in great condition. Sometimes, if the price is right, it makes sense to bid on something like this, hoping that the record sounds better than it looks. In any case, this is a record worth looking at and it’s also worth looking at some of the other items from this seller this weekend. A few weeks ago we wrote about a Joe Newman record selling for a high price because of a cover illustration by Andy Warhol. Now here’s another album with a Warhol cover, Count Basie, RCA 1112. This is being sold by Atomic Records, one of the largest eBay jazz sellers.

Sonny Rollins: A Birthday Tribute
Sep 12, 2008 Features, Jazz Memoirs
Tuesday was Sonny Rollins’ 78th birthday. Happy Birthday, Newk.
First time I saw Sonny was in the early 1970s at the Village Vanguard. Sonny wasn’t playing live when I first got into jazz. He was in one of his several retirements. I’d go to clubs in the city and see Bill Evans and Monk and Roland Kirk and Elvin Jones and Jim Hall and they were all great. But Sonny was my hero, and he was the one I was aching to see in person.
So I was quaking with excitement that first gig at the Vanguard, a dark, rainy, gloomy Tuesday night. Who knew what to expect?

Some Hot LPs For the Weekend
Sep 11, 2008 10-Inch LPs, Blue Note, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay
When we were doing the jazz blog regularly back in 2004 and 2005, we would often look ahead to give our readers a peak at some of the interesting upcoming items on eBay, particularly heading into a weekend, when a lot of people are perhaps off doing other things. This is a tradition we’ll try to resurrect as we begin blogging regularly again. So, here are a few items and sellers to look at this weekend. As always, when you look at an item, try to look at the seller’s other items as well, since many of these sellers are posting some nice rare records.
Herbie Nichols Trio, Blue Note 1519. This is an original pressing being sold by a dealer in France who has some other very nice items this weekend. Another one from this seller

Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, At What Price?
Sep 11, 2008 Features, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay
We’re back posting regularly on the blog, which means we’re back to watching eBay. It’s been a while and, from what we can tell, the prices have held pretty steady over the past couple of years. We’re looking at a batch of records over the weekend and we’ll summarize them in a few posts today, tomorrow and Saturday as well. One of the records on our list is Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601. This is, of course, one of the premium jazz collectibles. If you look in our Price Guide,

Song For My Father
Sep 9, 2008 Jazz Memoirs
A Jazz Memoir By Al Perlman
Jazz was always in my life. It was my father’s great love. I grew up in a tiny first-floor garden apartment in Bayside, Queens, five of us with one bathroom, a small kitchen, two bedrooms, two closets, a living room and another family living in equally cramped quarters directly above us. There wasn’t much space and my mother made it even smaller by banning us from the living room. This was our “show” room to be kept in pristine condition and used only when we had guests: We weren’t permitted to sit in it or talk in it or eat in it or do anything in it. My mother kept plastic on the furniture and took it off only when there was company. The one exception was when my father was home and wanted to listen to jazz. That’s where he had his great big Fisher console with the hi-fi and radio.
