A Classic and a Collectible (and a few More)

Warne copyWas watching another copy of John Coltrane, Blue Train, Blue Note 1577. This was also an original pressing with the New York 23 label on one side. There was a copy of this last week with a VG cover that sold for $1,666. This one was in better shape — VG+ for the cover and either VG+ or VG++ for the record, depending upon how much you trust the seller’s description. This one sold for $2,318. As opposed to my headline for the Ellington at Newport record mentioned earlier, this one is a classic and a collectible. And it’s value as a collectible seems to keep on rising.

The same seller had this one, which you don’t see too often: Warne Marsh, Jazz of Two Cities, Imperial 9027. This was an original pressing in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $208.14. I’ve owned a reissue of this record for many years, but can’t remember ever putting it on the turntable. Maybe tonight.

I was also watching these two U.K. original pressings and I still don’t get it: Moondog, Esquire 32-055. This was in M- condition for the record and Ex for the cover. It sold for $405.65. Then there was Sonny Rollins, Saxophone Colossus, Esquire 32-405. This was in Ex+ condition for the record and M- for the cover. It sold for $312.14. I know these are U.K. pressings and the collector’s market (and the collector’s mentality) is often disconnected from the actual value of the music, but Moondog more valuable than Saxophone Colossus? Forgive me on that that one.

  • Definitely a fan of Jazz of Two Cities, though I only own it on CD.

Moondog’s Prestige records are hard to find, especially in nice shape, and I can’t say I’ve ever seen the Esquire pressing of that title so it must be quite rare. Beautiful artwork and the music is interesting, if not something I would pull out often.

  • A few years back, in what of those rare moments of cosmic intervention, I stumbled across a NY23 (well, NY23 on Side 1, W 63 on Side 2) pressing of Blue Train for pennies. Any idea how many copies of this pressing exist? I never thought it was an incredibly rare piece, but last week’s auction results have me wonderin’.

    Please excuse the typo 🙂

If you are interested in English Esquire covers, look at this seller.

  • yeah, those are nice Michel, but his grading looked a little suspect, at least the feedback wasn’t too enticing.

  • yea i finally just got the imperial 2nd press ‘winds of marsh’ with the stereo alternate versions, but that just makes the mono double more desirable for me- also for some reason cant freaking find a the warne on MODE…i find the other modes all the time, except that one
