A Tale of Five Blue Notes

Another day, another batch of rare jazz vinyl to watch on eBay.

Miles Davis Volume 1, Blue Note 1501. This looks to be an original Lexington Avenue pressing, the first of the 1500 series. It is listed in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. The start price is around $200 and so far there are no bidders with just a couple of days to go. This seller has a bunch of nice items up for sale this week, including: Miles Davis Volume 2, Blue Note 1502. This also looks to be an original pressing in similar condition to Volume 1, M- for the record and VG++ for the cover. This one also has a start price of around $200 and has one bidder, so far. One more Blue Note: Paul Chambers Quintet, Blue Note 1564. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing listed in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. The bidding is in the $250 so far for this LP.

May as well stick with Blue Notes this morning:

Lou Donaldson, Wailing with Lou, Blue Note 1545. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. There are five days left and the bidding is in the $160 range.

Grachan Moncur 111, Evolution, Blue Note 4153. This is an original New York USA pressing with the ear, Van Gelder, etc. The record is listed in M- condition and the cover is VG+. The price is $150 and there are no bids yet.

  • I have 1501 and 1502, both first pressings. And it may be just me, but these two seem to pop up much more often than, for instance, the other ones that feature in this post today. And both the Paul Chambers and Lou Donaldson are on my wish list.

  • That Lou Donaldson looks pretty rough, reputable seller.. but I wouldn’t consider that cover as a VG+ at all.

  • Two 5″ seam splits and paper loss on the front still merits a VG+? From Euclid? Looks like I need to start grading my own items more liberally if that’s the case.

  • Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.

  • …Love the cover on 1501. Definitely a great price for this one so far. Too bad about the condition on that Lou Donaldson 1545… Sadly it isn’t a first pressing, as it doesn’t have the NY23 label on both sides. Despite the grading, at least the photos don’t try to hid any of the flaws. I have bought a great deal of Jazz LP’s from Euclid over the years, and never been disappointed. They are definitely one of the more reputable sellers out there for the most part.

  • I would concur with the doubt about the Donaldson cover grade, no way that’s VG+. VG yes, no way sticker tears on the front will pass the test. I am surprised at that from that seller? but the photo does speaks for its self.

  • I have had to return a couple of items to Euclid in the past due to overgrading…
