Blue Notes, Prestiges, Jazz Collector Price Guide

Bone & BariSorry. I had promised more updates for the Jazz Collector Price Guide and then got distracted by the lovely holiday weekend up in The Berkshires. So here are a few more that will go into the Price Guide soon:

This is a new high point for this record: Curtis Fuller, Bone & Bari, Blue Note 1572. This was an original pressing with the West 63rd Street and NY 23 labels. The record was listed in M- condition and the cover was VG+. The final price was $1,789. I have an M- copy of this record. Would I sell it for $1,789? Hmmmm.

This one also sold for quite a hefty price: Ray Bryant Trio, Prestige 7098. The record and cover were only in VG+ condition, although the cover certainly looked nicer in the photo. Good lesson to be learned here: Spend some time on the photos if you are going to list on eBay, and make sure they are nice and clear. This record sold for $987.77.

Jerome Richardson, Roamin’ with Richardson, New Jazz 8226. This was an original purple label with the deep grooves and the record and cover both seemed to be in M- condition. This one sold for $374. Frankly, I thought it would fetch a higher price.

This is one of those we were watching where it was really hard to gauge the actual condition of the record, because the seller claimed ignorance and listed the condition of the record and the cover as “GOOD or better.” In record collecting parlance, good means the record is really in pretty awful shape, perhaps not even listenable. I got the the feeling that this seller’s records were a lot better than that, including: Curtis Fuller, New Trombone, Prestige 7107. It sold for $393, which means buyer’s probably assumed it was at least VG+ or better. Didn’t see feedback on this particular record, but also didn’t see any negative feedback on any of the other records either.

  • No NY23 labels on BLP 1572, and it shouldn’t be.

  • I’d have pegged the Jerome Richardson to fetch more as well (indeed I want it to cuz I have it!). I wonder if the item being located in Italy had anything to do with it? I think most of us who buy and sell have learned to avoid the Italian post like the plague.

  • When you say “NY 23,” aren’t you referring to the back cover and not the label?

  • Fredrik and Earl — yes and yes, my mistake. Thanks for reading so carefully.

  • If the cover on the Curtis Fuller, New Trombone is anything to go by the record should be in great shape.
    Funny, i think the grading system needs a proper overhaul.
    Trashed (unplayable) Poor (snap, crackle, pop)
    Good (Clean) Mint (virtually unplayed)

    All this POOR G- G G+ VG- VG VG+ VG++ VG+++ (oh yes there is!) Ex Ex+ EX++ M- M

    argghhhhhhh
    talk about working blind!

  • Eric Dolphy’s ‘Far Cry’ went for more than 4 times I thought it would http://www.ebay.com/itm/350825842516?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 Perhaps another record that’s not longer within my grasp.

  • GST — wow, that’s quite an incredible price for Far Cry.
