Catching Up on Jazz Vinyl Auctions

Here’s an update on some of the jazz vinyl we were watching last week, and a few that we’re watching this week:

Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601. This was an original pressing. The record was listed in VG+ condition and the cover was VG. The price was $1,025.

Sonny Rollins, Volume 1, Blue Note 1542. This was not an original pressing, but was an early pressing with the West 63rd Street address. The record was in M- condition and the cover was lasted at VG+. It sold for $251.39.

Grant Green, Idle Moments, Blue Note 4154. This was an original pressing that was listed in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. The seller was bobdjukic and it was only listed as “rare” not “insanely rare.” No matter. It still got top dollar: $570.

And here are a few we’re watching for this week:

This is another one from bobdjukic and it is “ultra rare:” Sonny Rollins, Newk’s Time, Blue Note 4001. This is an original pressing in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. It is closing later today and the price is approaching $300. This seller has a lot of interesting items for sale, so you may want to check them out. Here’s another: John Coltrane, Coltrane, Impulse 21. This is an original stereo pressing that’s listed in excellent condition for the record and the cover, which we would translate to VG++. The price has been bid up to nearly $130, which is pretty high for a stereo version of this record.

  • I love this! Since retiring after a disability, I’m enjoying a renaissance in collecting vinyl, and find it fascinating. It’s very interesting, and investigating records is addicting when you also love the music. I suppose I have a favorite in Clifford Brown, and have learned about the bigger drummer label and the silver ring, too. Any thoughts on his collectability long term? I’ve seen Hank Mobley vinyl hit 5 digits-what gives? Maybe not a lot were pressed, Clifford’s records seem fairly plentiful. Anyway, great reading about your observations in the vinyl world of classic jazz! S.L.
