Condition in the Eye of the Beholder
Okay, this is the last catch-up for now, then I will move on to more current listings.
Introducing Johnny Griffin, Blue Note 1533. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing in VG+ condition for the record and VG for the cover. As we are seeing, the prices for records in less than pristine condition seem to be rising, at least if the records are original Blue Notes. This one sold for $710.
Here are a couple of Eric Dolphy records, also in less than pristine condition: Eric Dolphy, Out There, New Jazz 8252. This seemed to be an original purple label pressing listed in VG or VG+ condition for the vinyl and VG+ for the cover. It sold for $177. Eric Dolphy, At the Five Spot Volume 2, Prestige 7294. This was an original yellow label pressing. The record was in just VG condition and the cover was VG+. It sold for $147.50.
Fred Jackson, Hootin’ and Tootin’, Blue Note 4094. This was an original New York USA pressing. The record was in VG++ condition and the cover was VG+. The price was $209.62.
Kenny Burrell, Blue Lights Volume 2, Blue Note 1597. This was an original pressing listed in Ex condition for the record and the cover, which, of course, has the Andy Warhol illustration and design. This one sold for $610.
Here is something… wow!

Jeff Barr sold me a pristine copy of this one for 80 $ in 1996. At this time my wife told me i was breaking the bank. I still have it and cherish it just as the first day. Divorced the wife.
Michel….good man!
“Divorced the wife.” Michel,I believe the attitude of the former Ms.Michel is grounds for divorce in most progressive states, yes?(I’ve been tracking the same lp on Ebay, much to my bitter disappointment-too much bread!)
Well for sure…i was talking about the “Speak No Evil” record. I also have the Johnny Griffin. For this one, i never disclosed the price i paid 😉
Speak No Evil is one of my favorite Blue Notes. A high price yes, but in my humble opinion worth it compared to some of the blowing sessions that sell for significantly more.
Boy. Michel on this thread, and Adamski on the other thread. What *is* it with all of you gentleman getting divorced over Blue Notes?!? x C
Caroline, you may expect to get several proposals just from this site alone. But be careful. You want to make sure its real love, and they’re not just in it for your Blue Notes.
Al: No need to worry. I only have eyes for *you*(r Blue Notes)….. x C
Watch out, Caroline – any proposed merger between to haves such as you and Al would surely be challenged as a violation of monopoly laws.
“two ‘haves'”
Now, now, now – Mr. P seems happily married to Ms. P, so there will be no mergers of any type…. 🙁
Fred Jackson BN 4094 – one of my favorites & one of the bluesiest BN´s – ( just listened to it last night after having seen here ) is much too cheap. I would never sell it for about 200 bucks.
Ah… Fred Jackson’s Hootin’ ‘N Tootin’ – a fantastic album that you can play over and over. Whenever I DJ at our local Jazzfestival, I always play four or five cuts from it. Absolutely smokin’.

I strongly recommend the fans of Hootin’ ‘N Tootin’ to lay hands on the CD reissue, ’cause it contains seven bonus cuts that continue the fun for another 40 minutes! 😉
