Down By the White Riversides

ZootWe’re watching quite a large number of jazz vinyl auctions on eBay now, so let’s get right down to it:

Zoot Sims, Zoot, Riverside 228. This is an original white label pressing listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The start price on this one is about $330 and so far there are no bids. I imagine this one will sell and perhaps it will be sold for the buy-it-now price, which is about $500. Those white label Riversides are quite lovely to own, very substantive with heavy vinyl. Here’s another from the same seller: Sonny Rollins, The Sound of Sonny, Riverside 241. This one is also in M- condition for the record and cover, and it comes in as the same price points as the Zoot record. Again, so far there are no bidders. Curious.

This one may be nice, but it would probably help to see a clearer picture of the cover if you were thinking of bidding: Johnny Griffin, A Blowing Session, Blue Note 1559. This looks to be an original New York 23 pressing. The record is listed in excellent condition and the cover is VG. The bidding is already passed $700 with two days to go, a bit surprising given the condition of the cover.

Here’s a nice copy of Sonny Clark, Sonny’s Crib, Blue Note 1576. It has the West 63rd cover, but not the New York 23, so it is an early pressing but perhaps not a first pressing. The record is in M- condition and the cover is VG++. The price is in the $400 range with a bit more than a day to go.

  • I’m curious about this description for the vinyl in the 1559: “…some very minor marks and scratches probably sleeves marks.Nothing that will affect the quality of the sound,no popping or skipping.”

the use of “nothing that will effect the quality of play” would imply that the seller hasn’t played it; but then how would he know there is “no popping or skipping”?

I’m often mystified by the descriptions on ebay

  • Anyone have a spare sleeve of Saxophone Colossus with NYC address they would like to sell or with a trashed record? I found a prettly nice lp but the sleeve is trashed. I’d love to work something out if you do or know where I may find one. I know its a longshot but i figured i’d give it a try. feel free to email me at michaeljcampitelli@gmail.com

  • can anyone tell me how a seller….. 100%http://www.ebay.com/itm/CANNONBALL-ADDERLEY-LP-SOMETHING-ELSE-ORIGINAL-BLUE-NOTE-w-63rd-D-G-VG-NM-/161143367617?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item2584e4a7c1
    …doesn’t know that a 1595 original does NOT have the “r”, gets a 100% feedback (12062 sales)?

  • My white Riverside are UK labels at first I thought Decca, but on reading LJC label guide the writing on the record is handwritten and pressed by a unbranded subcontractor is this version still collectable? also What is a smoking press?

  • Actually I see it sold for US$2000 last year and US1425 in 2008, but definitely at the higher end of the price it usually fetches

  • Out of curiosity. Was the other Art Pepper on Tampa RS 1001 ever issued in red vinyl?

  • 15 years ago I purchased the Paich/Pepper for $130 – it arrived in the mail broken – it was insured so no money lost, but every time I see it go for higher & higher prices, my gut turns over!

  • @Earl: Yeah that’s frustrating, maybe someone could drop a link to Jazzcollector via eBay so he could learn?

I don’t want to slam that seller to much, I purchased a couple Miles Davis Quadraphonic LP’s from him and was very happy with the described condition.
