eBaying: Warhol, Cliff, Horace

I had never even seen the Cool Gabriels album until a few weeks ago, and now it keeps popping up on eBay and selling for quite high prices. I was tracking two copies this week. This copy, Cool Gabriels, Groove 1003, was listed in VG+/VG++ condition for the vinyl and, more importantly, M- for the cover. The reason the cover is more important is because it is the Andy Warhol illustration that is presumably driving the high prices, rather than the music by Conte Candoli, Nick Travis, et al. Don’t want to break Rudolf’s heart, but this one sold for $2,310. The other copy, Cool Gabriels, Groove 1003, was listed in M- condition for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover. This one sold for $1,807. If you want to see a picture of the cover, you can scroll down a few posts on Jazz Collecctor.

Here’s a beauty for the $1,000 bin: Cliff Jordan, Cliff Craft, Blue Note 1582. This was an original West 63rd pressing with the deep grooves and was listed in M- condition for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $1,330.

This one had a start price of about $325 and, surprisingly, did not sell: Horace Silver Quintet, Blue Note 5058. This was an original pressing and ti was listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It features both Hank Mobley and Kenny Dorham and it has sold for as much as $537 as previous recorded in the Jazz Collector Price Guide. Any theories on why this one did not sell: The seller is definitely reputable and has excellent feedback.

  • I was disgusted seeing these prices, whereas mine did not meet the reserve at $ 1245.
    I just listed mine again.
First I thought it to be wise to wait for a while, but Cool Gabriels keep popping up, so I’d better be there, in the market place.

  • there was probably one guy/girl willing to buy i for $ 537, but he has his copy now…
by the way, i love cliff jordans album, he is underestimated..

  • I have a copy of 5058 that looks VG+ and plays worse. I wouldn’t mind upgrading, just not at the moment. I wouldn’t have a problem with $325 price on it though.

  • The Andy Warhol ‘wave’ is back again. This time it’s the Cool Gabriels album that we’re going to see sky rocket for the next couple of days, just like what we saw a few weeks ago with the known Warhol Blue Notes. One pops up, sells for gold and -presto- dozens of other sellers offer it. Just imagine how many sellers are now frantically diggin’ in their crates to find the next big Warhol cover. Knowing all that, it’s almost a shame to see that Cliff Jordan’s 1582 fetched “only” 1300 bucks compared to that one Cool Gabriels that harvested a thousand bucks more…

  • That’s indeed ridiculous.
But I wanted to say thanks to Al for posting more regularely! Keep on the good work!

  • Wow, there is a bid on that monk.

  • Sold !!! question:someone paid $ 99.00 for an ORIGINAL jazz classic. How much for mine original NYC but NOT ORIGINAL jazz classic ?

  • I paid $125 or so for mine. Never really thought much of the cover to be honest. Good music though.

  • PrLp 7053: it is really BS, this story of Andy Warhol designing the cover of the second issue of 7053. The original has a picture of Monk. As a matter of fact, this second cover is by Reid Miles and they say Warhol’s mother hand-wrote some words/names, other than MONK. Maybe Andy held his mother’s hand. Anyway for the amateurs this is the legend and they are willing to pay big money even for an OJC-edition cover. Good for the seller.
I for one prefer the first cover featuring a nice photograph of Thelonious. No credits for the photo or the sleeve design on my NYC copy.

  • Rudolf, at the time I purchased my 6 or 7 years ago, I thought it was the original because it was consistently fetching better prices than the monk picture cover. I find out soon after I was wrong. I didn’t even know the whole Warhol story. To be honest, I’m not a Warhol fan at all and even if I was only buying a record for the cover I can think of many that I prefer to some of these Warhol covers.

  • holy cow-what is the deal on OJC pressings these days? Are they all OOP or just a select few?

  • almost incredible:even the king of original-original-NOT hasn’t tried the ojc road yet.
    but,after this sale,never say never.
I had one,Rollins’ moving out:when I got the original I gave the OJC copy away for free.
    If only I knew….

  • On that Monk OJC pressing. I would view that with a bit of skepticism. There was one bidder and when there’s one bidder at a price like that I sense a shill.
