Griff and Warhol For The $1,000 Bin

Here are a couple of recent sales we’ve been watching:

Johnny Griffin, The Congregation, Blue Note 1580. This one looked to be an original pressing. The listing doesn’t mention deep grooves, but they are clearly visible in the photo. The record was listed in M- condition and the cover was VG++. The price was $1,091.77. That’s a high price, to be sure, but with what’s happening in the Blue Note market lately and the market for Andy Warhol covers, I’m frankly surprised it didn’t sell for more.

Bill Evans, Waltz For Debby, Riverside 399. This was a white label promo copy, which looks quite cool. The record was in mixed condition: Side 1 was listed as VG++ and side 2 was listed as VG. When I have a record like that, I tend to go with the worst-case scenario and rate it VG. The cover was listed as VG++. The price was $790.

  • I’m always a little surprised by how much copies of Waltz For Debby go for. It’s a fantastic record, but I always see copies up on Ebay, makes me wonder why the consistently fetch over $300.. I think this is the second time I’ve seen a WLP of that one though.

  • Al would be good to have more sub-1000 USD or even sub-100 USD posts based on their musical content and effort, rather than what Japanese and German collectors are ego bidding on. No offence but I think we are have come full circle on these 1000 bin auctions and there are so many other great jazz records out there which deserve a mention based on their musical prowess rather than inflated collector value…

  • Matt: agree. This weekend I indulged myself in playing early Moodsville and Swingville Red Garland LP’s. Red with Hawk on SV 2001. Red and Eddie L. Davis on MV 1. Great stuff, well recorded. Also the Red Garland trio MV 6. These three albums give a prime selection of modern bass playing. Paul Chambers, Doug Watkins and Sam Jones. Gorgeously recorded by the master, Rudy van Gelder.

  • Here are two gems I had long forgotten:
Eddie Jefferson ‘Body and Soul’: http://www.allmusic.com/album/body-and-soul-r141617
    Mel Rhyne ‘Organizing’ :

    Anyone heard these?
