Inventions, Dimensions and High Prices

herbie hancock jazz vinylReaders are sending me results of auctions and posting them on the site. Here are a few to share:

From CeeDee, this comes out of his “priced out again” department: Herbie Hancock, Inventions and Dimensions, Blue Note 4147. This looked to be an original New York USA pressing in VG++ condition for the record and just VG for the cover. There were more than 20 bids and the price ended up at $449.

Another reader sent this link: Wayne Shorter, Speak No Evil, Blue Note 4194. His object was that this was described as an original pressing, and sold as if it was an original pressing — yet, despite the presence of the New York USA labels and the Van Gelder, there were no Plastylite ears. This one was in probably VG++ condition for the record, with no discernible description of the cover. It sold for about 323 euros, or nearly $450.

This one is linked an an earlier post:

Lawrence Marable, Tenorman, Jazz West 8. This was an original pressing that looked to be in probably VG+ or VG++ condition for the record and M- for the cover. It sold for $2,045.

  • Looks like someone got a very expensive Liberty pressing of “Speak No Evil”. Ite missa est.

  • Michel:
Why is that a second press? Orig Riv 399 should be large label Inc., which this is. No?

  • Look at the turntable photo in the Speak No Evil auction. Looks like something used to make moonshine!

  • Also no mention of an ear in the Inventions and Dimensions auction. That seller knows his stuff and will mention if an ear is actually present.

  • That waltz for debby should be Rlp on the label to be first press.

  • There was a sealed copy of Waltz For Debby recently on the bay that only fetched $200 USD. I thought about snagging it, but the back cover looked off.. In fact the back cover looked exactly like the back cover of the copy that’s mentioned here. Catalogue number for both mono and stereo listed on the top… for some reason i thought this was later pressing.. any thoughts?

  • The Inventions and Dimensions cover looks pretty beat.

  • Earl :On the second press the lettering is different and there are both mono and stereo number mentionned. On the first it reads hi fidelity on the top right. IIRC

  • Thanks Michel – I assume you’re talking about the cover; the record label as mentioned by Mike is also off (has RM instead of Rlp

Do I have this right? – is there anywhere a list of all these features for Riverside? Previously, I was only aware of the 4 different early labels.

  • Wow. That Marable seems pricy-ish to me, if only in VG+ condition. Love the track “Air Tight” on that rec…

  • Hancock is also a Liberty pressing. This seller always mentions the presence of the “ear” – not this time …

  • Can’t seem to find it in the ol’ completed listings file, but a VG copy of “Cool Struttin'” just narrowly missed the $2000 mark according to Collectors’ Frenzy. VG.
I can think of a lot more things to buy for $2000 than a record in that condition. Ten really nice, NM $200 LPs, for instance.

  • I bought my NM/NM copy of Cool Struttin’ for $3600 a couple of years ago from one of the greatest dealers in the world, worth every penny. But a VG copy for nearly $2000, that’s messed up.
