Jazz Vinyl Countdown: Lou Donaldson Blue Note

This is the record: Lou Donaldson, Here ‘Tis, Blue Note 84066.

This one falls into the “if” category:

If it were an original pressing . . .

If it were mono . . .

If it were in mint condition . . .

If it didn’t have a corner clip . . .

If it had a pianist instead of an organist . . .

It it had all or perhaps even any of those characteristics . . .

. . . if it had that, it would probably remain in the collection. It is a nice record, some nice playing, but when I ponder my assortment of jazz vinyl for some Lou Donaldson to put on the turntable, a Liberty pressing of Here ‘Tis will never again come off the shelf. So, look out for it on eBay this week.

Are the Liberty recordings really sub-par compared to any West 63rd pressings? Just curious. I bought Horace Silver’s The Toyko Blues today that was a Liberty recording. I paid $25 for it at record store in the East Village…I think it sounds pretty good through my MacIntosh amp.

    Thanks.

Al you’ve inspired me to embark on my own Vinyl Countdown. I was surprised to have already set aside 20 or so lps for trade.
