Lee Morgan, Indeed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lee Morgan Jazz VinylPeople have already commented on this, but it must have its own post. That Lee Morgan record I mentioned the other day, Lee Morgan, Indeed!, Blue Note 1538. If you recall, I kind of joshed with the seller, chiding him for stating that his copy was “the finest on planet earth.” Apparently the hyperbole worked quite well, indeed! There were at least nine bidders that I could identify and 25 bids. The final price was, get this, $7,786. Not counting that weird Hank Mobley Blue Note 1568 from a few months back that got a bid of more than $11,000 — which turned out to be not a real bid, but some kind of barter — this is the highest price we can recall seeing for any jazz record. I hope the buyer gets a lot of joy out of it. I’m sure the seller already has.

  • Al, I fantasized with the idea of owning this LP, but in reality this record was always out of my league, right from the original listing price. Looking back, there have been some nice copies of Indeed come up every now and then, perhaps not quite as good as this copy, but with a description like…. “NM+++ condition. Original cover with Kabuki is factory fresh with deep, rich color and no blemishes or repairs. Looks and plays AS NEW. Purchased in 1982 from the legendary Leon Levit collection”… I guess it was always going to attract the big fish.

  • The other one i had kept an eye on, was a second pressing of Sonny Clark Cool Struttin’. I wonder if the JC readership would be happy paying US$1130.00 for a second pressing. I saw a nice NJ copy of Saxophone Colossus go for a similar price recently too. Here is the link to the Sonny Clark auction:

  • Ah Lee Morgan indeed… I find this session a little clumsy…
Being a lucky owner of this Lexington rarity (My copy is on the VG++ side, cover and record) i Will give it a spin…
But at 7700 $, i’d rather buy me a Gibson ES 335 in blond finish…

  • Me thinks too many dollars chasing too few top grade copies of the holy grail titles. These prices are pulling up the prices for the early 2nd pressings now. But I wonder if this is a real step change in values, or just a bubble.

  • Anyone willing to spend that kind of bread for an lp featuring a still-undeveloped Lee Morgan,an inconsequential sax player and mediocre compositions is welcome to it. For me,a “holy grail”only deserves the title when the music measures up to the hype of it’s scarcity. Nice cover, though(the only reason I pull out my UA version from time to time).

  • I heard someone mention elsewhere that the sale didn’t go through. Any veracity to this claim?

  • I saw it was relisted last Wednesday, but the seller ended the auction before it could run its course.

  • Should be carefully noted that this record didn’t actually sell for this price.

  • Hey, Rich. Sorry — what do you mean?

  • where is the misprint variation on this Blue Note 1538? what is the missing R issue. Thanks I have a copy I my collection for 20 yrs and just playing the record mw 2018. I wanted to sell but saw the different prices.
