Nice Records, Quite High Price Tags

Let’s catch up on some rare jazz vinyl auctions we’ve been watching, starting with: Gene Ammons, HiFi Jam Sessions, Prestige 7060. This was an original New York yellow label pressing. The record and cover were in M- condition. You may recall I posted on this last week when there were no bids and a start price of $200. I was speculating about whether it would sell at all for that start price, and my prognostication was that it would sell. Indeed, it did: for $607. Quite a nice price for a Gene Ammons Prestige, which don’t often sell for such quite a lofty figure. The seller SweeDeeDee had quite a week, with several of his records selling for quite high prices. Here are a couple more: Horace Silver and Spotlight on Drums with Art Blakey and Sabu, Blue Note 1520. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing in VG++ condition for the record and M- for the cover. It sold for $681. Thelonious Monk with Sonny Rollins, Work, Prestige 7169. This is a New Jersey yellow label pressing, but the record is a reissue, an early reissue, but a reissue nonetheless. It was in M- condition for both the record and the cover and sold for $293. Wow.

  • That Silver cover is really nice, all most looks new. Looking at it reminded me of an article I read a while back after Dave Brubeck’s passing. The writer was debating who was now the elder statesman, of jazz, or the greatest living jazz musician. He was debating Sonny Rollins & Wayne Shorter. No mention at all of Horace Silver? Band Leader Gerald Wilson is never mentioned on those lists either, He’s pushing 95, I rather enjoy his 60’s Pacific albums.

  • Benny Golson is also a contender IMHO.

  • I’m perplexed by the price on that Ammmons record. Those jam session albums are nice, but there are quite a few of them, and they are readily available in VG to VG+ condition. I find that price even more surprising than some of the BN Liberty pressings that have been discussed here previously.

  • Silly question but what identifies the Monk as an early reissue?

  • @Joe L :Al means that all the songs of this record were previously issued on various Prestige titles. Rudolf probably wouldgive us more precisions or corrections ,maybe Prestige 7075

  • “Work” is a reissue of PRLP 7075 “Thelonious Monk / Sonny Rollins” which had a different cover and NYC labels. It was originally released in ’56 – “Work” is a Bergenfield label reissue from ’59.

  • Thanks Joe. That makes sense.

  • There are crazy people. The Sonny Rollins is a second pressing with diferent cover.

  • Hi,

to encounter if it is a reissue, I would suggest that you use
Al’ s link by using the Prestige discography on the right side of this page. Just a thought..

    good hunting

  • There it is. Thanks rockies. My laziness has been called out.

  • I really like the cover on Work for whatever reason, though not enough to pay almost $300…

  • Michel/Chris: as you suggested, 7169 is an early reissue of 7075. The latter has never been issued in a N.J. version. That is to say, I have seen it in N.Y. version only. The cover of 7075 is an abstract by Hannan. 7169 has a very nice photo cover by Esmond Edwards and is collectible as well. It has the yellow/black label of course.

  • isnt this gene all stars the hardest of the prestiges to find?

  • ….hardest of all the gene prestiges
