On EBay: Hank & a Pair Of Lees

Here are the results of a jazz vinyl few items we’ve been watching on e-Bay:

Lee Morgan, Indeed!, Blue Note 1538. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing with the flat edge. The record was in VG+ condition and the cover was VG. The price was $1,247. This seller had about 300 records for auction at one time. Not sure how that works as a selling strategy. I generally tend to spread my listings out a bit more, but I can see where it makes sense to do a lot at one time. You can combine shipping costs, which always helps, and sometimes buyers figure if they’re buying a couple of records from you, the may as well bid on a few more. But it’s putting a lot of eggs in the basket of who may be active on eBay that particular week. In any case, it didn’t seem to impact the price of this Lee Morgan LP. In addition, these were from the same seller:

Hank Mobley Quintet, Blue Note 1550. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was VG+ and the cover was VG. The price was $426.

Lee Morgan Sextet, Blue Note 1541. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing. It was listed a VG+ for the vinyl and VG+/VG++ for the cover, although there was big red writing on the back cover that would really make it VG+ for most serious collectors. I’m sure that impacted the final price, which was $518.18.

  • Personally,I like to list in smaller amounts(10,20). The larger the listing, the more hassle involved(and running to the p.o. to confirm shipping costs on a box of,say,15 lps is no great fun either). On the other hand,I might reconsider if I had a pool of lps in the thousands to draw from.

  • I agree, I just finished a bunch of 29 last night and it is a lot of hassle. 20 is the manageable maximum.

  • In terms of hassle remember that many sellers are brick and mortar shops with staff to assist (or smaller 2-3 man home opeations). Also, many folks these days are set up with their own post scales and weigh and print postage from home (and also have the PO come do package pickup). So the degree of hassle is relative. That said, I’m with you guys and like to keep it in the 20-30 range.
