On eBay: Some Blue Notes, Curtis Fuller Savoy

I’m sitting here hanging out with the lovely Mrs. JC and whilst she’s chatting on the phone I’ve spent the last hour going through two full days of jazz records on eBay. Here are some of the items I found — far fewer collectibles than I would have expected to encounter over 48 hours, by the way:

Johnny Griffin, The Congregation, Blue Note 1580. This is an odd one: It has the original vinyl, but the cover does not seem to be an original. Does anyone know the vintage of the cover — it has no address on it? The cover is by Andy Warhol, so that has always added to the value of this particular Blue Note. The record and cover are both listed in M- condition. Despite the cover the bidding has already reached more than $240 and the record has yet to reach the seller’s reserve price.

The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson Volume 1, Blue Note 1505. This is an original Lexington

Avenue pressing and it is listed in M- condition for both the vinyl and the cover. The bidding has reached $300  and there is no reserve, so someone will buy this one.

Curtis Fuller, Imagination, Savoy 12144. This looks to be an original pressing in VG++ condition. The price is about $40, but it will sell for a bit more than that.

  • Al: some Europe only albums obtain constantly high prizes, like “TILT” of Barney Wilen on French Swing (last time $ 2300) and the Franco Cerri albums on Italian Columbia, one sold for over $ 2900.
Another high flier is “Boom- Jackie- Boom- Chick by the Paul Gonsalves quartet on U.K. Vocalion. This one went this weekend for $ 2086, last price was $ 1500.
All these were issued in Europe only.

  • Yes, thank you Rudolf. I don’t always catch all of these, but I’ve been watching Tilt and Barney and Boom-Jackie-Boom-Chick in the Price Guide. I noticed I had a copy of Tilt in there that sold for $2700. The Cerri albums I haven’t tracked, so I will start. Are they good records (aside from being valuable)?

  • Al: I had a mint copy of one of the Cerri’s (the one with Barney Wilen, 1961 vintage) and decided not to play it when I put it on auction. The other Cerri is with Lars Gullin, 1959 vintage. So I never heard the music of either one.

  • I never saw the Cerri/Gullin one.
