Two For the $1,000 Bin

bishopWe’re watching a couple of records now that look as if they will sell for big dollars, including: Walter Bishop Jr., Speak Low, Jazz Time 002. The record and cover are both in M- condition. What I find interesting here is that it is a Canadian pressing. Typically, Canadian pressings are not considered nearly as collectible as their U.S. counterparts. This one seems to be doing okay in the bidding, however. The current price is $1,111 with a full day left on the auction. The other thing is that the cover is listed as M-, but there seems to be some clear ring wear in the picture. I don’t quite understand the bidding, but it is not my record to buy or sell.

Jutta Hipp with Zoot Sims, Blue Note 1530. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG for the cover. The bidding had been slow, but it has picked up steam. There are now 28 bids and the price is $1,136.

  • I have never seen other versions of Jazz Time than Canadian. I believe they were all produced in Canada and that no US counterparts exist.

  • Agreed, Rudolf. Al the Jazz time are both Canada – USA pressing. Always both adresses on back. Rhis one is an original press, period.

  • Thanks for the clarification. I don’t think I own any of the Jazz Times.

  • Al, you sure there isn’t an opened box from the Baltimore score stuffed with Jazz Times etc?

  • I recently picked up Rocky Boyd Quintet – Ease It featuring Kenny Dorham on Jazz Time for $30, Record NM, Cover VG++. This is a beautiful record and will get constant play from me! I’m on the hunt for more Jazz Time, definitely an underappreciated label that produced quality music.

  • Adamski, at one point I had the Rocky Boyd record but foolishly sold it, without ever even listening to it. Not a single Jazz Times in the Baltimore boxes. You can’t have everything, can you? Don’t want to ever lose the thrill of the hunt.

  • The Rocky Boyd record is interesting. There is a theme on it that exactly sounds like “Impressions” of Coltrane, which is enigmatic. In fact : “Why not” (on Rocky’s “Eease it” ) is credited to Pete la Roca = “Why not” (On Dave Pike’s “Pike’s Peak”) is credited to Dave Pike = “Impressions” (on John Coltrane’s “Impressions”) credited to John Cotrane. Strange, isnt’ it ?

  • Al, that Rocky Boyd is a nice record, I have a German Polydor copy with quite a nice cover, reissued under Kenny Dorham’s name…maybe a marketing ploy to cash in on Dorhams’ relative popularity…I believe the issue is called ‘West 42nd Street’. What happened to Rocky Boyd?? Was this the only solo release?
Anyhow, your right Al, the thrill of the hunt is what keeps it all bouncing along. Reminds me of when i was chasing Mrs. Adamski, hmmm…sometimes the chase is far more exciting than the capture!!!
    (I am only jesting, honest!)

  • What do people think on the price of that Jutta Hipp?

Seems a bit on the low side for VG++

  • Huh, never seen the International Polydor pressing before but I did a quick search and indeed, there it is. Much more affordable than the Jazztime usually is (though $30 is a pretty nice price!)

  • JOK…
web link and a comment “check out this guy’s equipment” Wow! …… I get very worried mate 😉

  • Doh. Never thought about the unseen. Does sound like spam, doesn’t it?

  • JOK: That video blew my mind…I think that was the first time I have ever “seen” audiophile equipment and actually thought I might like to own a turntable or tube amp or Altec 604s like that someday…that was pretty awesome, thank you for sharing. But it burns me up when peope have amazing setups like that and they use a crappy smartphone microphone to record the music! I suppose using digital recording software still wouldn’t get the sound of the Altecs, but it would be a lot better than a smartphone.
    .
Just curious, why did you post it? Did someone mention that record? What record is it anyway?

  • PS: To clarify, I’d love to have one of those smaller recessed vintage-looking turntables in that video–not the spaceship! 😉

  • JOK nice gear, lovely turntables.., thought Frankenstein was about to walk in!! all those wires and tubes etc. …funny but all I wanted to do was look through the record racks. Quiz…what was the record playing in the clip??

  • It’s “Boss Tenor” by Gene Ammons…

  • I suspect the Teres 255 is a DIY.

I always wondered what kind of tables people use who buy these wonderful old jazz records. I mean, you certainly do not want to be playing these on a Crosley, do you?

I have three tables, and depending on what I am playing (and the mood I’m in) generally dictates which table to use. For my old mono records, I like to use the Empire 598, and for newer music, I use my Kenwood KD 770D, and for anything I have in my collection, I play on my modified Thorens TD 160. The Empire has such a great sound with those old records, I’d highly recommend it for you collectors out there.

  • Jok-that is a hell of a system you came across-thanks 4 the link. I imagine anyone who can afford such a setup-I stopped counting TT’s at 3- wouldn’t think twice about spending a thousand on the Walter Bishop. Me?I’d be content to play the OJC of Boss Tenor and call it a day. What an album!!
BTW,that system’s owner also had room for a decent number of cd’s,reminding viewers that good sound is not solely relegated to the LP(in spite of what you might have been told).

  • Good lord, is that guy playing records or launching a satellite?

  • he has the same ‘problem’ as we have here on the forum: An almost un-natural passion for something specific! I LOVE IT!

i did some high-end equipment buying in the beginning, untill i red an article of a guy who had hifi-equipment for over 100 thousand dollars, and then he stated:.. I am ALMOST satisfied with the sound… sold everything and bought something Jezus would not be ashamed of, and started listening to the music 🙂

  • This is an exact copy of the Thorens I have, the plinth made by Doug Olsen (he only made 20 of these plinths for various tables). The only significant difference is mine has a SME 3009 tone arm and this one has a Grace 707 tone arm. It is a lovely table, and sounds marvelous.

  • beautifull.

I must say, although most people here on the forum are serious listeners, there is never any discussion about high-end equipment. Off course, it’s about the music itself, this forum (thank god!) but i would expect more people here with a passion for the audio hardware..

  • or maybe everyone here has a Linn Sondek and a tube amplifier and think it’s just normal 😉
