Leo Parker LP — And The Winner Is . . .

It’s time to announce the winner of the free record, Leo Parker, Rollin’ With Leo, Blue Note BST 84095. This is the 1986 release of this LP, which was the first time it was released with the cover art and catalog number that was originally intended by Blue Note in 1962. What’s more, this is a promo copy, with a promo stamp on the cover. The record is in VG+ condition and the cover is M-. The rules of the contest are simple: All you have to do is post a comment on the Jazz Collector site, anywhere on the site. Over the past two weeks, since we’ve been running the contest, we’ve had quite a bit of commenting on the site, but as I looked back, it’s not that many people. There are only six eligible to win the record. They are: Jason, Rudolf, Michel, Bethellodge, Mike M and Erich Schultz. And the winner is . . . . Read more

Quickie Quiz

I posed a question in a post yesterday, but nobody has responded yet. I know you all know the answer, so perhaps you just missed it. But here’s the question I posed yesterday: On the album Here Comes Louis Smith, Blue Note 1584, the alto player is listed as “Buckshot La Funke.” Who is it really? By the way, there’s still time to post a comment on the site and be eligible to win the Leo Parker LP. We’re going to have Mrs. Jazz Collector draw the winning name tonight, and we’ll post the results tomorrow.

Sonny Plus 4, The Real Deal

Yesterday we posed the question about the original cover to Sonny Rollins Plus Four, Prestige 7038. Michel provided us with the correct answer and here, from our own collection, is a picture of the original cover. By commenting on the site, Michel became eligible to win the Leo Parker record on Blue Note that we are giving away. There’s only a little bit more than a week left in the contest, so please comment on the site if you would like to be eligible to win it. By the way, the copy of Sonny Rollins Plus Four that was on eBay yesterday, wound up selling for $165.

Today on EBay, February 16, 2009

Where is everybody? We’re giving away a free record — Leo Parker, Rollin’ With Leo, Blue Note 84095 — and all you have to do to qualify for the contest is to comment on the Jazz Collector site, anwhere, even on items three or four years old. So far, since we put the record up on Friday, we’ve had only a couple of comments. Perhaps jazz collectors aren’t interested in free records???????

Anyway, we hope to see more comments. While we wait, here are a few of the items we’re watching on eBay today: Coleman Hawkins, The Hawk Flies High, Riverside 233. Hawkins usually isn’t among the most collectible of artists, so this might wind up as a bit of a bargain. It’s an original pressing with the white label and it features JJ Johnson on trombone. The record is listed as M- and the cover looks to be VG+, at least. The current price is around $40. Read more

Time for Another Free Record

Okay, here we go again. So far we’ve given away three free records and now it’s time for number four: Leo Parker, Rollin’ With Leo, Blue Note BST 84095. This one actually has a little bit more credibility as a collectible than our previous giveaways. This is the 1986 release of this LP, which was the first time it was released with the cover art and catalog number that was originally intended by Blue Note in 1962. What’s more, this is a promo copy, with a promo stamp on the cover. The record is in VG+ condition and the cover is M- and it’s being offered free to one lucky reader of Jazz Collector. As before, the rules for entering this contest are very simple: All you have to do to be eligible to win the record is to post a comment on the Jazz Collector site any time between now and when the contest ends, which is the end of day February 26.  You can post a comment on this post or anywhere else on the site and we’ll enter you into the drawing. If you win the record we even pay for shipping, anywhere in the world. This is a very nice record, worth having for sure. In addition to Parker, it features Dave Burns, Bill Swindell, Johnny Acea, Stan Conover, Bill Lucas, Purnell Rice and Wilbert Hogan.

Speaking of Leo Parker, someone recently sent us a link to this eBay auction:

Free Mobley Record: The Winner Is . . .

OK. We finally got Mrs. JC to pick the winning name out of a hat for the free record, Hank Mobley, Workout, Blue Note 84080.And the winner is . . . Jason. Jason, in your comment, you mentioned that you had just re-set up the old turntable, so now you’ll have these Mobley record to play. We’ll send you the record, free — and we’ll even pay for the shipping. All you have to do is send is your mailing info, to al(at)jazzcollector.com. Congratulations. We’ll be running another free give-away within the next few days, so please stay tuned.

Free Record Update

We’re still in the process of running a contest to give away a copy of Hank Mobley, Workout, Blue Note 84040 (yes, it’s a reissue, but, still, it’s free). The rules of the contest are exceedingly simple: All you have to do is post a comment anywhere on the Jazz Collector site before the end of the day on Feb. 4. At that point, we will put all of the eligible names into a hat, or maybe a bowl, and we will ask our lovely bride, Mrs. Jazz Collector, to select a winner. The winner will receive the record free, including free shipping to anywhere in the world. We do this every once in a while. We enjoy it, and we’re hoping it keeps people coming back to the Jazz Collector site. So far, it looks like we have nine entrants into the contest: Rudolf, Michel, Jason, Brian, Dan Hodina, Chris Moran, Dave Sockel, Joe Panettieri and Andrew Joseph. If you would like to add your name to this illustrious list, all you have to do is comment, anywhere, on Jazz Collector before we announce the winner on the morning of Feb. 5.

How About Another Free Record?

OK, now that we’re back posting regularly again, it’s time to give away another free record. So far we’ve done two giveaways: An OJC copy of The Dual Role of Bob Brookmeyer, Prestige 7066 and a copy of Wayne Shorter, Adam’s Apple, Blue Note 84232. For the next giveaway we have another Blue Note: Hank Mobley, Workout, Blue Note 84080. This is not an original pressing — we’re generous, but not THAT generous — but, instead, is a 1988 reissue from EMI-Manhattan records. The record and cover include the original packaging, including the liner notes from Leonard Feather. Both the record and cover are in M- condition, very nice. Personnel on this LP includes Mobley, Grant Green on guitar, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. It was originally recorded on March 26, 1961.

We have one copy of this to give away, so we will conduct a drawing. In order to participate in the drawing all you have to do is comment on the site — you can comment on this post or ANY post — between now and the end of the day on Feb. 4. This gives you more than two weeks to comment anywhere on the site. At the end of the day on Feb. 4 — which happens to be my birthday — we will put all of the names of the participants into a hat and ask our lovely bride, Mrs. Jazz Collector, to pull out one lucky winner. Then we will send the record to that person for no charge at all — we will even pay for the shipping. So good luck to all, and we hope to see some of your comments on the Jazz Collector site.

Jazz Collector Listener’s Guide, Nov. 28, 2008

It’s Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and, for some reason, this seems a day to sit around and do nothing except listen to music. So I have been in my music room poring through records and putting on some favorites that I don’t listen to all of the time, or haven’t listened to on vinyl in a while. I started with an old Riverside, Bags Meets Wes, Riverside 407. This was recorded in December 1961 and features a great rhythm section of Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones and Philly Joe Jones, in addition, of course, to Milt Jackson and West Montgomery.  Side one starts with a blues, “S.K.J”  and then Stablemates, Stairway to the Stars and another blues, Blue Roz. I got involved listening to Philly Joe on brushes, which is always a miracle, and that led me to Sonny Rollins, Tenor Madness, Prestige 7047, not Side One with Coltrane, but Side Two featuring Paul’s Pal, with some great Philly Joe brushwork, then My Reverie and The Most Beautiful Girl in the world. And The Winner Is (Part 2) . . .

Yes, Barack Obama. YAY!!!!!! Not quite as important, we do have a winner of our latest record give-away. Early this morning we asked our lovely bride, Mrs. Jazz Collector, to pick from the seven names who entered our contest to give away the record, Wayne Shorter, Adam’s Apple, Blue Note 84232. And the name she picked — Michael Haensch. So Michael if you’re out there, you can send an email to me at al(at)jazzcollector.com with your mailing address and contact information, and we’ll send you the Wayne Shorter LP. We’ll be posting another item in the next day or two giving away yet another record. Why? Why not? Stay tuned.
