A Couple of Events for Jazz Collectors

Allow me to lay off eBay for a moment to inform you of a couple of upcoming events that may be of interest. Coming up first is the Jazz Record Collector’s Bash, June 21 and 22 in Iselin, New Jersey, at the Hilton Woodbridge. It has been many years since I attended one of these but, hey, there are jazz dealers with records for sale, so it’s always worth a shot. They also show films and have other activities. I do have a fondly remembered record score at one of these events, a story I have told, probably whenever I’ve written about the event before. The crux of it is there was this guy with a bunch of nice records, many Prestiges and Swingvilles, and a 10-inch Sonny Criss on Clef, and they were all $5 each and I was the first one to arrive at his table. ‘Nuff said.

I also received my notice and contract for the WFMU Record Fair, which will take place

Nov. 22-24 at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York. This is usually the top event for buyer and sellers in the NY metro area, and possibly across the entire Northeast. You may recall that the 2012 event was cancelled because of Hurricane Sandy. I am still debating whether to get a table for the event this year. I do have a lot of nice doubles to sell, and I am not on eBay these days, so it is likely I will be there for at least one day, perhaps two, with a Jazz Collector table. I’ll keep you posted.

  • Al, how likely is it to find a really rare high-end collectible in top shape on that record fair? Are there lots of collectibles or can you consider yourself lucky if you find one?

  • It’s been a while since I attended one of these, so I’m not sure what you may find. There will be a bunch of dealers there, so I imagine there will be some collectibles, although the prices may be high. If I was in the area I would definitely check it out but, alas, I will be in The Berkshires that weekend.

  • hi al,

i own an antique, art and record store in iowa city. i’ve done the austin record show several times but not in a few years. i also set up at the des moines and minneapolis record shows on a regular basis. over the past few years i have acquired quite a few of very collectible jazz lps and given that i do not sell on the internet many are still with me. any suggestions on record shows i should consider attending to sell? nyc area is not in consideration due to the high cost of lodging. i also am willing to sell at wholesale level to respectable collectors/dealers. please advise.
    respectfully,
paul young p.s. best to respong to me at turbo acct. rather than website
