The Arrival of Kenny Dorham, Jaro 5007. This was an original pressing that was listed in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. It was a bit of a strange auction — there were only two bids and the winning bid was an even $800. Anyway. There was a lot more interest in this one, with more than 20 bids: Kenny Dorham, Quiet Kenny, New Jazz 8225. This was an original deep groove pressing in VG+ condition, which I’d say was questionable based on the description. It sold for $740.

This one nearly made the $3,000 bin: Donald Byrd, Byrd Blows on Beacon Hill, Transition 17. This was an original pressing with the booklet. The record looked to be in M- condition, minus the labels, of course, and the cover looked to be about VG++. The price was $2,926.54, which is still staggering to me.

And what would a day in Jazz Collector world be without a few Blue Notes to admire:

Art Taylor, AT’s Delight, Blue Note 4047. This was listed as an original pressing, although it would have been nice to see pictures of the labels, and it was described as being in at least M- condition. It sold for $887. Hank Mobley and His All Stars, Blue Note 1544. This was also an original pressing that was described as being in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. VG+ is often a catchall label that has a wide range. For instance, based on this descriptions I’d definitely take this VG+ over the Quiet Kenny VG+. This one sold for $686.76. Johnny Griffin Volume 2, Blue Note 1559. This looked to be an original deep groove pressing in just VG condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. It sold for $611.

Lou Donaldson, Quartet, Quintet, Sextet, Blue Note 1537. This was an original Lexington Avenue flat-edge pressing. It was listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The price was $1,008.80. Rudolph asks if perhaps there is a slowdown. We have seen this sell for more than $1,800 recently, so who knows. I find so much of what happens on eBay arbitrary: Depends who’s looking that week, how competitive the bidding gets, how the record is listed, who does the listing, etc. Here’s another Donaldson: Lou Takes Off, Blue Note 1591. This was a bit of a strange

listing because the seller didn’t offer much in the way of details: The headline said VG++, but not sure if that referred to the vinyl or cover or both, and the listing didn’t mention deep grooves or ears or RVGs, although there was some information in the questions. No way to know if this was an original. It was in shrink wrap, but not sure if that provides a clue. Anyway, it sold for $230.50. If it’s an original the buyer will be happy, if not, then there will probably be a return. This is another one that usually sells for a higher price: Art Taylor, Taylor’s Wailers, Prestige 7117. This seemed to be an original pressing — although there was no photo of the label — and it was listed in VG++ condition for the vinyl and VG+ for the cover. It sold for $274.99.

Dorothy Ashby, Hip Harp, Prestige 7140. This was an original New York yellow label pressing and it looked to be in nice M- condition for both the vinyl and the cover. The price was $193.

Miles Davis Plus Horns, Prestige 7025. This was a New York pressing. The record was VG++ and the cover was M-. The listing lacked a little bit of detail — such as whether it was a kakubushi cover — and the price was $170.17. Just a few weeks ago we saw an M- version of this LP sell for $799.

Ray Bryant Trio, Prestige 7099. This was an original New York yellow label pressing

and it was listed in M- condition for the vinyl and VG+ for the cover. The price was $486.

Art Taylor, Taylor’s Wailers, Prestige 7117. This was an original New York yellow label pressing and it features John Coltrane. The vinyl was M- and the cover was VG+. The price was $432.

Jimmy Forrest, Forrest Fire, New Jazz 8250. This was an original purple label pressing with the deep grooves and it was listed as M- for the record and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $162.

Eric Dolphy at the Five Spot, Prestige 7294. This was an original yellow label pressing with the New Jersey address. It was listed in M- condition for the record and the cover. It sold for $431. Also: Eric Dolphy, Outward Bound, New Jazz 8236. This was an original purple label, deep groove pressing. The record was VG+ and the cover was VG+ as well. The price was $252.

Cliff Jordan and John Gilmore, Blowin’ in From Chicago, Blue Note 1549. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing . The record was VG+ and the cover was VG. Price: $599.60

Duke Pearson, Hush!, Jazz Line 3302. This was an original pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. Price: $486

Art Taylor, AT’s Delight, Blue Note 4047. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. Price: $344. 89

Art Taylor, Taylor’s Wailers, Prestige 7117. This was an original New York pressing.

The record was M- and the cover was VG+. The price was $363.

Miles Davis, Cookin’, Prestige 7094. This was an original New York pressing in M- condition. Price: $312

Miles Davis, Kind of Blue, Columbia 1355. This was an original mono pressing in M- condition, both record and cover. Price: $179.50

Jay Jay Johnson Volume 2, Blue Note 1506. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. Price: $152.50

Gil Melle, Patterns in Jazz, Blue Note 1517. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The record was VG+ and the cover was VG+. The price was $255.30

Finally, Jackie McLean, A Fickle Sonance, Blue Note 84089. This was an original stereo pressing. The record and cover were both  M-. The price was $191.

This is one of interest to us: Johnny Glasel, Jazz Session, ABC Paramount 165. This is also from one of our favorite sellers, Analogman on Long Island, aka Infinity Records. About 25 years ago we purchased a collection and this record was in there primarily, we think, because of the presence of Dick Garcia on guitar. So it’s one of these records that’s been sitting on the shelf for 25 years and we’ve never played it. We’ve also rarely seen it on eBay, so we’re interested to see what it will sell for. We’ll try to listen to it later today and give you a report.

This seller, recordgraveyard1, has a bunch of records up today, most with pretty high start prices. This is one of the ones that started high but has already received several bids: Duke Pearson, Hush, Jazz Line 3302. The record is in VG++ condition, and the cover is VG+. The current price is $339.  Also from this seller, with no bids yet, is Donald Byrd, Byrd’s Eye View, Transition 4. This is an original pressing that looks to be in VG condition, perhaps a little better. There is no booklet. The starting asking from is $349. We’ll see if it sells. 

The seller packrat-auctions also has several nice items up for sale today, including: Miles Davis, Cookin’, Prestige 7094. This is an original New York pressing in M- condition, both record and cover. The current price is about $230.  Another from the same seller is Art Taylor, Taylor’s Wailers, Prestige 7117. This is an original New York yellow label. The record is listed as M- and the cover looks to be VG++. The current price is $271.

We predicted this record would sell for a high price, and it did: Lee Morgan, Sextet, Blue Note 1541. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing in VG++ condition. Price: $1,325

Another high-end Blue Note: Curtis Fuller, Bone & Bari, Blue Note 1572. This was an original pressing in M- condition. Price: $676.77

That Joe Newman LP with the Andy Warhol cover went for a bit less this week than it did a few weeks ago: Joe Newman, I’m Still Swinging, RCA 1198. Price: $57.77

Remember that Zoot record that was priced at just $30 a few hours ago. It wound up selling for $337.90: Zoot Sims, Zoot!, Riverside228.

And I really liked that copy of Art Taylor, Taylor’s Tenors, Prestige New Jazz 8219. It sold for $228.51. Not only is it a very cool cover, it’s one I don’t have in my own collection. Funny, I’ve been collecting for nearly 40 years and I still run across records I’ve never had a chance to buy, other than for top dollar on eBay.

I also spotted this one when it was in the $20 price range: Sonny Stitt, Kaleidescope, Prestige 7077. It eventually sold for $146.49. 

There were a lot of other records on the radar that we looked at, and we’re not going to go into each one now, but we will include every one of them when we update the Price Guide later this week. But a lot of viewers looked at the Impulse article, so here are some updates on some of those LPs before we close:

John Coltrane, A Love Supreme, Impulse 77. This was in just VG/VG+ condition. Price: $162.50

John Coltrane, Ballads, Impulse 32. This was VG+/VG+. Price: $114.05

Finally, Charles Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Impulse 54. This was a white label promo copy in VG+/VG- condition. Price: $54

Joe Newman, I’m Still Swinging, RCA 1198. This is the one with the Andy Warhol cover. As we noted in an earlier post, this sold recently on eBay for $200. This one’s current price is $16.50.

Art Taylor, Taylor’s Tenors, Prestige New Jazz 8219. This is an original pressing with the purple label and it seems to be in nice condition. Offered by Atomic Records, which is one of the larger jazz dealers on eBay.

Zoot Sims, Zoot!, Riverside 228. This is an original pressing with the white label in nice condition. Current price is only around $30. That’s pretty low. It’ll be interesting to see how high it goes up.

Hank Mobley, The Turnaround, Blue Note 4186. This is an original pressing with the New York USA label.

Finally, there was this really cool record from the seller wuxtrydecatur: Charlie Parker, Bird Blows The Blues, Dial 901. This was a red vinyl LP with no cover. Apparently there were only 300 copies pressed originally in 1949 and distributed by Dial owner Ross Russell via an advertisement in Downbeat. We expected this item to fetch a hefty price and it did: $800. There were several nice Bird Dial LPs on eBay this week, including two of the 10-inch Dial LPs that sold for more than $700 apiece.
