Stan Getz In Stockholm, Verve 8213. This is an original pressing with the trumpeter label. Excellent LP with Getz in fine form. This one is listed in M- condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. It is currently at $100.

Euclid Records has some nice records today, including these: J. R. Monterose, The Message, Jaro 5004. The record is in M- condition and the cover is just VG. It is already priced at more than $650. Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601. How much do you want to own a copy? Would you accept one in G condition for the record, with noise, and VG for the cover? Someone will. This one is about $125 and I expect it will sell for a bit more than that. Bud Powell, Time Waits, Blue Note 1598. This looks to be an original pressing. The record is in VG++ condition and the cover is VG+. The current price is $175.

Haven’t seen this one in awhile, but now it’s up for the second time in a week:

Donald Byrd, Parisian Thoroughfare, Brunswick 87904. This is the original French pressing and it is listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. It has a start price of $299 and so far there are no takers. Last week this record, along with its other volume, were sold as a set for $2,400. I would expect a buyer at $300 or more for this record, wouldn’t you?

This one is back again as well: Hank Mobley Quartet, Blue Note 5066. This is the original 10-inch pressing. The record is listed as VG or VG- and there is mention of surface noise, or, more accurately, “crackle.” The cover is VG. The current price is $152 with a couple of days left.

We also have some records we’re selling this week, including: Freddie Hubbard, Hub Tones, Blue Note 84115. This is a stereo pressing with the New York USA logo and it is in very nice condition. It is currently at $45.

Bud Powell’s Modernists with Sonny Rollins, Blue Note 1568. This 78 includes Dance of the Infidels and 52nd Street Theme and it was described as being in better than VG+ condition, but not quite M-. This sold for $89.88.

Max Roach Quintet, Blue Note 1569. This contains Prince Albert Part 1 and 2, with Kenny Dorham and James Moody. Let’s see how well my memory is working: Prince Albert is a head based on All the Things You Are, if I recall properly, and this version, in addition to being issued on 78, was issued

on a 10-inch LP, but not a 12-inch LP? I put that as a question mark because I don’t always trust my memory these days and I’m hopeful someone with either more knowledge or more time will either confirm or correct my recollections. This sold for $67.66

There was also this one: Thelonious Monk, Blue Note 1565. This one had Monk’s Mood and Who Knows. It was in VG+ condition and sold for $50.75.

The one other thing with buying 78s on eBay: They are difficult to package properly and not every seller is able to do so. I’ve heard of several experiences of records arriving cracked and, frankly, I had that happen to me — as a seller, not as a buyer — even though I had used the latest state-of-the-art packaging materials from Bags Unlimited. These things are just fragile, as anyone who has collected them can firmly attest.

Kenny Dorham, Afro-Cuban, Blue Note 5065. A beauty, no? This one is in M- condition for the record and what looks to be VG+ for the cover. The current price is around $225 and there are three days to go.

Here’s the next one up in the 10-inch Blue Note catalogue: Hank Mobley Quartet, Blue Note 5066. This is an original pressing, of course,and the vinyl looks to be M- and the cover somewhat close to M-. The current price is $338 and there are also three days to go.

Another 10-inch Blue Note? Why not. Here’s The Amazing Bud Powell, Blue Note 5003. This is an original pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It is being offered by Euclid Records and is currently at about $115.

Here’s the one on the list that will probably sell for the highest price:

Charlie Parker, Dial 203. This is part of that auction closing tomorrow from the Jazz Record Center. It is listed in “virtually mint” condition, which is saying a lot. This one is in the $350 range for now.

Here’s one on the Imperial label — don’t see too many of those, do you? Charlie Mariano With his Jazz Group, Imperial 3006. This is an original pressing in Ex condition. In classic Goldmine grading, what is Ex equivalent to  – VG+ or perhaps a little better than VG+. It would be nice if grading were standard.

A Date With Jimmy Smith, Volume 2, Blue Note 1548. This was in near mint condition and it was sold by the same seller who sold those pristine JJ Johnson records the other day. This one sold for $792. The record features Hank Mobley, Lou Donaldson and Donald Byrd, but this is still a new high price tag for it, at least for the time we’ve been watching it.

This one was from Euclid Records: The Fabulous Fats Navarro, Volume 1, Blue Note 1531. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing. It was listed as M- condition for both

the record and the cover. It sold for $711.01.

Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers, Blue Note 1518. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. The price was $561.01.

Bud Powell, The Scene Changes, Blue Note 4009. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record and cove were both listed in M- condition. The price was $549.

Jimmy Smith at the Organ, Blue Note 1551. This was an original West 63rd pressing. The record and cover were M-. The price was $522.

The Jazz Messengers at the Cafe Bohemia Volume 1, Blue Note 1507. This was an original pressing in M- condition. The price was $517.

I could go on, and perhaps I will later, but you get the point. Condition is critical, and if you have the condition, and it’s an original vintage Blue Note, the market has probably never been higher.

My friend Steve at Roundagain Records in Providence has a few nice records closing pretty soon, including: Bud Powell, Jazz Original, Norgran 1017. This is an original yellow label, deep groove pressing. The record is VG++ and the cover is VG+. The price is already close to $150. Here’s another Norgran: An Evening With Anita O’Day, Norgran 1057. This is also an original yellow label pressing. The record and cover are in M- condition and the price is about $115. Here’s one more: Lucky Thompson, Lucky Strikes, Transition 21. This one is in VG+ to VG++ condition for the cover and record and it includes the booklet, which is not always so easy to find with the record anymore. This one is close to $200.

This one is more than $80 but hasn’t yet met the seller’s reserve price:

Johnny Griffin Sextet, Riverside 264. This is an original pressing and it is described as being in near mint condition. It’ll be interesting to see if it reaches the seller’s reserve price, and what that reserve price may be.

This is from another seller that also has a storefront, Vinylhighway, which owns Looney Tunes in Boston: Dizzy Reece, Star Bright, Blue Note 4023. This may or may not be an original. It has the West 63rd Street address, but the seller doesn’t mention whether it has a deep groove and the picture is unclear. My guess is that, with a knowledgeable seller such as this, if there was a deep groove it would be mentioned, so I’d be a bit circumspect if I were bidding, which I’m not. Actually, if I really wanted to bid, I’d send a note to the seller asking about the deep groove. The record and cover are VG++ and the price is around $115.

OK, so I got to the JJ Johnson record and realized it was a New York USA pressing, and then I got to Blue Note 1513, Thad Jones, Detroit-New York Junction, and realized it was a Japanese pressing, and then I got to Blue Note 1515, Jutta Hipp at the Hickory House Volume 1, and realized, hey, I don’t own that record at all.

I knew all of that. I knew I didn’t have a complete original collection of Blue Notes. I knew I wasn’t even close to having a complete collection of original Blue Notes. I knew I never aspired to having a complete collection of original Blue Notes. But I felt compelled to go on, to go through the entire 1500 series and know exactly what I had

and what I was missing. At some point I got to Blue Note 1567, Curtis Fuller, The Opener. I knew I had a beautiful, clean, near mint copy of this record. I looked for it on the shelf. Gone. I had sold it. Never mind that I owned the record for years and listened to it once, and I have dozens of other records featuring Curtis Fuller. How could I have sold a mint copy of The Opener? What kind of collector am I?

And then came Blue Note 1571, Bud Powell, Bud! Gone. Sold for a reason I can’t recall. Then Lee Morgan, Candy, Blue Note 1590. This one I knew about before I got to the shelf. I had sold my original pressing 20 years ago for $500. The copy on my shelf now was a reissue of unknown origin. Yuch.

As I was doing this, I realized I was focusing more on what I didn’t have than on what I did have. Suddenly, it became important again to have all of the Blue Notes. I had put aside several Jimmy Smith records. These were all original pressings in the 1500 series. They were on a separate shelf with other records that were going to be sold. I took each of these records off the shelf as if it was a precious gem and I cleaned it and I labeled it and I returned it carefully to its rightful place in my collection, along with all of the other Jimmy Smith records that I will never listen to.

I had to keep going. It was after midnight, and I had been doing this obsessively for seven or eight hours and my adrenaline was pumping and I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep and I had moved on to the 4000 series and I was all the way up to Blue Note 4043, Horace Parlan, Speakin’ My Piece.

And then I stopped and haven’t looked at the spreadsheet since and haven’t felt the need to fondle a Blue Note for two days and I am hoping that, perhaps, the crisis is over and now all remains is for me to figure out what the hell happened and what I am to do next.

Also ending today is some nice 10-inch jazz vinyl from our friends at Euclid Records. Here’s one: Dexter Gordon Quintet, Dial 204. This one is listed as M- for the vinyl and VG+ for the cover. The price is only $67. Perhaps we may throw in a bid on this one, since this is a record we don’t have and would certainly like to have, even in the face of our Jazz Vinyl Countdown.

Another major seller with some major items this week is the seller jazzrecordrevival. Here are a couple they have up:

Coleman Hawkins, Hawk Flies High, Riverside 233. This is an original white-label pressing that looks to be in M- condition for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover. You don’t often see records by Hawkins commanding high collectible prices, but this one is doing quite well. It is at $115 with more than a day to go. From the same seller is this: Dexter Gordon, Our Man in Paris, Blue Note 4146. This is an original pressing. The vinyl looks to be VG+ and the cover VG++. The current price is about $85. If I were pressed to name my favorite Dexter Blue Note, this would be the one. Bud Powell is in great form on this record, and Dexter seems to be especially inspired.

Dexter Gordon, A Swingin’ Affair, Blue Note 4133. This was an original mono pressing with the New York USA labels. This was listed in M- condition for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover. The price was $192.51.

Horace Silver, Cape Verdean Blues, Blue Note 84220. This was an original pressing with the New York USA label. It was listed in pristine M- condition for both the vinyl and the cover. It sold for $45.

Bud Powell, Bud!, Blue Note 1571. This was an original pressing. The vinyl was listed as VG+ and the cover was listed as VG. The price was $127.50.

George Braith, Extension, Blue Note 84171. This was an original stereo pressing with the New York USA labels. The vinyl was VG++ and the cover was VG+. The price was $102.50.

Sam Rivers, Contours, Blue Note 82406. This is an original stereo pressing with the New York USA labels. The vinyl was M- and the cover was VG++. The price was $80.

Bobby Hutcherson, Components, Blue Note 4213. This was an original mono pressing with the New York USA labels. The vinyl and cover were both listed as VG+. The price was $122.50.

Bobby Hutcherson, Happenin’s, Blue Note 4231. This was an original mono pressing with the New York USA labels. The record and cover were both VG+. The price was $147.50.

Bobby Hutcherson, Dialogue, Blue Note 4198. This was an original mono pressing with the New York USA labels. The record and cover were both VG+. The price was $79.99.

Pete LaRoca, Basra, Blue Note 84205. This was an original stereo pressing with the New York USA label. The record was M- and the cove was VG++. The price was $122.50.

The Amazing Bud Powell Volume 2, Blue Note 5041. This was one of the nice 10-inch LPs offered this weekend by the seller roverd-90. It was listed in M- condition for both the record and the vinyl and it sold for $432. Also from that batch was this: Thelonious Monk, Genius of Modern Music, Blue Note 5002. This one M- for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover. The price was $313.66. We were also watching this copy of John Coltrane, Blue Train, Blue Note 1577. This was  a second (or later) pressing with the New York USA label. The vinyl was listed in M- condition and

the cover was listed as VG++ or M-. I guess it was up to the bidder to decide. In any case, the record sold for $288.55. It’s interesting with some of these Blue Notes how even the later pressings are becoming collectibles. I  have no objections to that. The sound quality on the New York USA pressings is finet and it’s certainly nice to have an older mono copy of Blue Train in this kind of condition.
