Here are updates on some of the records on eBay we’ve been watching at Jazz Collector recently. Most of these will be added to the Jazz Collector Price Guide by the end of the week. Take a look, please.

Sahib Shihab, Conversations, Polydor 623257. This was an original pressing in M- condition. Price: $256

Billy Bauer, Let’s Have A Session, Ad Lib 5501. This was an original pressing with the red label. The record was in M- condition and the cover was VG++. It sold for $160. I have two personal Billy Bauer stories. Back in the early 1970s, I had a gig as a rhythm guitarist accompanying my friend Dan Axelrod. My musical talents are, to be generous, modest at best, but Dan taught me enough chords to support him while he soloed. At the time Dan was taking lessons from Billy Bauer and one night Bauer came down to see us with a group of his other students.

And, during our first set, Bauer told all of his students to keep a careful eye on what I was doing because I was swinging so well and doing what a good accompaniest ought to be doing. It was, and still is, the highlight of my musical career. Fast forward 30-something years, I’m standing in Tower Records in Westbury, Long Island, browsing in the magazine section. Some little old man comes up to me and asks if I’ve seen the latest issue of Guitar Player Magazine. I point him towards it, he thanks me and says they just did a profile of him. Really, I say. Who are you? Billy Bauer, he replies. A few weeks later, sadly, I got a call from Dan: Billy Bauer had passed away.

Back to the records:

The Return of Art Pepper, Jazz West 10. This was an original pressing. The record was VG and the cover was VG+. Price: $162.50

Booker Ervin, That’s It, Candid 8014. This was an original pressing in M-/M- condition. Price: $255

Here’s that Roland Kirk record I mentioned the other day: Roland Kirk, Third Dimension, Bethlehem 6064. This was an original pressing in M- condition. Price $338

Finally, here’s that Jackie McLean record I threatened to bid on: Jackie McLean, Jackie’s Pal, Prestige 7068. This was an original pressing. The vinyl was VG and the cover VG+. Price: $202.50

I’ll be back with more later. Stay tuned.

In addition to the items mentioned in previous posts, here are some records we at Jazz Collector are watching today:

Dexter Gordon, A Swinging Affair, Blue Note 4133. This is an original New York USA mono pressing. The record is VG+ and the cover is M-, still in its original shrink wrap. The current price is $152.50.

Jackie McLean, Jackie’s Pal, Prestige 7068. This is an original New York pressing. The record is in VG condition and the cover is VG+. The current price is $86. Daresay, we might actually bid on this one. We know we have talked often about reducing our collection, but we have a soft spot for this because we had it, loved it and sold it in a fit of temporary insanity. And now we could get it back, albeit in worse condition, but for a fraction of the price for which we sold it. Hmmmmmm . . . ..

Booker Ervin, That’s It, Candid 8014. This is an original pressing in M- condition. It is being sold by Euclid Records, which also has the Roland Kirk LP we mentioned in an earlier post today, as well as several other interesting items listed today. It’s worth taking a look. This copy is already at $220.50, which is higher than we remember for this record.

This one is interesting: Mighty Mike Cuozzo, Savoy 12051. This is somewhat collectible because it boasts the presence of Eddie Costa on vibes. Actually, it’s a pretty good record. This copy is priced at $9.99 now and has no bids. It’s sealed, which means it could be an original pressing, or it could be a later pressing with the maroon label. The seller won’t open it, so you’re taking your chances. We recently had a Curtis Fuller Savoy record, also sealed. We opened the seal and discovered, to our pleasure, that it was an original pressing. We sold it on eBay for $320. This is not in that class as a collectible, but it could be an original — the cover doesn’t seem to have the frame that later pressings do. This seller has several other sealed records, including this one: Dexter Gordon, Dexter Rides Again, Savoy 12130. This one does have the framed cover, but you never know . . . it could be the real thing. Someone is obviously hoping so: The record has already been bid up to $81, which is way past what it would be if it were a copy with the maroon label.

It’s been a few days, so we’ll spend today catching you up on some of the interesting action we’ve been watching on eBay. Here goes:

Miles Davis, Kind of Blue, Columbia 1355, represents one of the defining jazz albums and now it is taking its place as a collectible of value as well. We’ve seen copies in nice condition begin selling in the $100 range earlier this year and now we have this copy breaking the $200 price barrier. It sold for $203.37.

Here’s a rare 10-inch LP sold this week by Atomic_Records: Beryl Booker, Dale 23. Price: $351

Here’s another 10-incher from Atomic_Records, but this one failed to meet its reserve price: Moondog and Friends, Epic 1002. High bid: $146.94

I used to be able to remember where and when I got every single record in my collection. However, now that the number has swelled to more than 10,000 and my age has swelled past 50, it’s not so easy anymore. I do remember getting a copy of this record, Abbey Lincoln, Straight Ahead, Candid 8015, for free. Years ago a colleague at work was throwing out a bunch of old records and knew I was a collector. Most of it was junk, but this LP, featuring Eric Dolphy, was sitting in the pile, and it was in great condition. It sold this week on eBay for $182.50.

A couple of big-ticket Blue Notes went this week:

Tina Brooks, True Blue, Blue Note 4041. Price: $2075

Freddie Hubbard, Open Sesame, Blue Note 4040. Price: $1,590.50

A few more interesting Blue Notes

Jutta Hipp with Zoot Sims, Blue Note 1530. Price: $798

Freddie Hubbard, Goin’ Up, Blue Note 4056. Price $361

Dizzy Reece, Blues in Trinity, Blue Note 4006. Price: $347

And, finally, a couple from the Prestige catalog:

Jerome Richardson, Roamin’ With Jerome, New Jazz 8226. Price $724.93

Jackie McLean, 4, 5 & 6, Prestige 7048. This was in beautiful condition. Price: $812.12

That’s it for today. We’ll be back one more time with another eBay update before our next newsletter on Friday, July 23. Keep looking for us on the web and don’t forget to check out Price Guide and Latest Prices over the weekend for the latest information on eBay. — al
