A New Adventure in Jazz Collecting

Sometime over the next few weeks the seller Carolina Soul Records will be running an eBay auction that will include many really, really nice original jazz collectibles. These will include a beautiful copy of Jutta Hipp With Zoot Sims, Blue Note 1530, along with nice copies of the other 12-inch Jutta Hipp Blue Notes; a really nice original New York pressing of Sonny Rollins Saxophone Colossus, as well as Blue Note 1542, 1558 and 1581; a West 63rd copy of John Coltrane, Blue Train, Blue Note 1557, plus more than a dozen additional original Tranes; a bunch of Miles originals; Donald Byrd Blows Beacon Hill on Transition, Kenny Dorham Blue Note, Lou Donaldson Blue Note. I could go on.

Watching Some Original Original And Not So Original Jazz Vinyl

Very interesting thread on the previous post. Glad everyone has been able to keep the conversation going in my absence. For the record, I am and always will be an original, no matter what anyone says. And now, back to watching original rare jazz vinyl on eBay. I have a lot of stuff I am watching now, so let’s go, starting with Frank Morgan With Conte Candoli and Machito’s Rhythm Section, GNP 12. This is an original pressing with the red vinyl. The record and cover are both listed in VG+ condition. The start price is $250 with more than two days left on this auction. I was fortunate to acquire a near mint copy of this record when I purchased the Bruce M. West collection in Baltimore. For some reason, I always considered this to be an album for the $1,000 bin. I guess the reason is that it’s really rare and hard to find, plus there’s not that much early Frank Morgan on record. When I did a search on Popsike, however, I discovered that the top price for this record was $331, and that was back in 2006. I guess it’s just not a Blue Note. Read more

Four For The New Year

Happy New Year. This week we are watching a new auction from the Jazz Record Center in New York. Seems like the seller Carolina Soul has become the predominant seller of rare jazz vinyl on eBay in the past year or so, but the Jazz Record Center is still a gold standard as far as I’m concerned. This week, we have a couple from Kenny Dorham, starting with Kenny Dorham, Quiet Kenny, New Jazz 8225. This looks to be an original pressing that would probably be in M- condition for the record and cover, were it not for a drill hole through the cover and label. The item is new to eBay and doesn’t close for more than six days. The starting bid was $1,000 and there is already one bidder.  Also, there is Kenny Dorham, ‘Round About Midnight at the Café Bohemia, Blue Note 1524. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing that looks to be in M- condition for the record and probably VG++ for the cover. Very nice copy, I’m sure. Like Quiet Kenny this auction closes in more than six days and already has a bid at $1,000. Read more

Bewitched, Bothered and Befuddled

Time again to clear out some items from the Jazz Collector eBay watch list, whatever that is. Let’s start with Cliff Jordan, Cliff Craft, Blue Note 1582. This is an original pressing that was listed in Good condition for the record and Fair for the cover. The seller suggested that the buyer clean the record “multiple times” before judging the condition. OK. Also, I should mention that the seller’s rating on eBay is 97.7%. When I originally spotted this record, the start price was $1,000 and I was curious to see if it would sell. It didn’t. So the seller relisted it for $500 and it did sell. I don’t have an original copy of Cliff Craft in my collection, but I wouldn’t be interested in one of G/F condition, especially if I had to pay $500 for it. Very happy with my clean United Artists pressing, which I bought for $10 from Red Carraro sometime in the previous century. Read more

Variations on a Vinyl Theme

Here’s some random jazz vinyl we’re watching on eBay, starting with Miles Davis, The New Miles Davis Quintet, Prestige 7014. This looks to be an original New York yellow label pressing with the original green cover. Coltrane’s first LP with Miles. The record and cover are both listed in VG+ condition. The bidding is at $56 with five days left on the auction. From the same seller, and also under $100 (for now) is Lou Donaldson, Lou Takes Off, Blue Note 1591. This looks to be an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record is listed in VG condition and the cover is VG++. Bidding is at $51 with five days left. Read more

Lou, Red, Mr. PC and Everything is Beautiful

Just a sittin’ here watchin’ some rare jazz vinyl on eBay. Let’s start with Lou Donaldson, New Faces, New Sounds, Blue Note 5021. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing. I had this record once, but I don’t have it anymore because I sold it 30 years ago. It’s an old familiar refrain that involves a sunken boat. In any case, I spotted this copy on eBay because the seller’s listing said “BEAUTIFUL COPY” in ALL CAPS and it caught my eye. But the listing has the vinyl in VG or VG+ condition and the cover n VG+. BEAUTIFUL COPY, as always, is in the eye of the beholder. The auction closes in five days and the opening bid price is $200, with no takers so far. Read more

Random Vinyl with Random Musings

Time to clean out my watch list in time for the holiday weekend. Some of this stuff goes  back a few weeks (or more) but I kept them in the queue thinking that someday I would do exactly what I am doing now. Here goes, starting backwards, from May there was Howard McGhee, Dusty Blue, Bethlehem 6055. This was an original mono pressing that was listed in VG condition for the record and G for the cover. It was in pretty bad shape, yet it sold for nearly $500. I don’t understand what it is about the record or condition that warranted that kind of price, with a bidding war to boot, so perhaps someone here can elucidate me. Read more

Rare Jazz Vinyl, Pristine and Not

On my eBay watch list this week are some rare Gene Ammons records from our friend Rudolf, including Gene Ammons All Stars, Jammin’ With Gene, Prestige 7060. This is an original New York pressing that looks to be in pristine, nearly new condition. The bidding is at $106 with more than four days left on the auction. I don’t often listen to these jam session type records, but whenever I do, I am pleasantly surprised. Of course, it does help to have musicians like Ammons, Jackie Mclean, Art Farmer, Donald Byrd, Doug Watkins and Mal Waldron. Rudolf, if you are watching Jazz Collector my question is: Are you selling duplicates or are you digging deeper into your own collection, perhaps starting with the A’s? While we’re on the subject, here’s another: Gene Ammons, Funky Hi-Fi Jam Session, Prestige 7083. This is another original New York promo copy that also looks to be in pristine condition. Where can you possibly find records like these in that condition, like buying them new in a record store in the ’50s. Bidding on this is at about $102, also with more than four days left. Read more

Instagram????????

Glad to see the last post garnered so much interest and discussion. Not sure whether to thank Helen Merrill, the person who bought the Helen Merrill record, Strictlyheadies or Instagram itself. I realize I am missing a lot by not being active on Instagram. I actually have two accounts, AJDoctor, which is also my eBay account, mostly inactive, and Jazz.collector. I just don’t go to Instagram very often. Nor do I go to Facebook or other social media. Maybe I’m just old, but I’ve never thought of myself as a moldy fig and I have been active online since the early days of the net. In fact, I started a newspaper in 1994 called Inter@ctiveWeek, which was the first print and online publication focused on the internet and bore the tagline “The Internet’s Newspaper,” which, by  the way, I came up with. Anyway, maybe this discussion will help inspire me to participate. One of these days, when people don’t want to pay me good money to write about technology and business anymore, I will have more time to get back to selling records, and perhaps then I will be ready to expand both my horizons and my community. Until then, it’s back to watching records on eBay, starting with: Read more

Jazz Vinyl From Europe, U.S., and a Wish List

Another day, another batch of rare jazz vinyl from eBay. Let’s start in Europe with Barney Wilen, Tilt, Swing LDM 30.058. This looks to be an original pressing in VG++ condition for the record and the cover. The bidding is in the $300 range and there are four days left on the auction. This has been a high-end collectible since I began watching eBay many years ago and has sold for more than $1,000 several times, including a high of $2,700, according to Popsike. I’ve never owned this record, nor have I heard the music. In fact, if it weren’t for eBay, I probably wouldn’t know about it. I’ve always been impressed whenever I’ve listened to Wilen, so I imagine it is collectible not just because it is rare, but because the music is also first rate. Oui? Read more
