And Now For Some Prestiges
Jun 28, 2012 Prestige
Yesterday was Blue Note day, today we promised a look at some of the Prestiges.
Jackie McLean, Lights Out, Prestige 7035. This is from the same seller that is selling the Mobley, which is now approaching $3,500 and still hasn’t met the reserve price. The Jackie record looks to be in what I would call VG++ condition for the vinyl and VG+ for the cover. It is an original pressing with the yellow label and New York address. The record is in the $400 price range and has already passed its reserve.
Doug Watkins, Soulnik, Prestige/New Jazz 8238. This looks to be an original purple label pressing with the deep grooves. The record is listed in M- condition and the cover is VG++, with a Preview Copy stamp on the back. The start price for this one is around $150 and so far there are no bidders.
John Coltrane, Cattin’ With Paul Quinichette, Prestige 7158. This is an original yellow label pressing with the deep grooves and it is in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The start price is around $300 with no bidders. The seller may be stretching a bit with that start price, but then again . . . . .

Adventures in Jazz Collecting, The Auction Part 4
Apr 11, 2010 Features, Prestige, Verve
OK. The auction records are here, in a newly created bin on the floor of my music room/office. It’s fun looking through the records, of course, encountering pleasant surprises, but what I am most looking forward to is listening to them. That’s the best thing about getting new records, or even getting new copies of old records: Exploring and discovering (or rediscovering) the music. As I type this I’m listening to Wes Montgomery Full House and it’s probably the first time I’ve listened to this LP in 10 years or more. With 10,000 records a lot of great LPs wind up sitting on the shelf. I remember the first time I heard this record. I was in a car with my friend Dan and we had the radio on and we heard a Wes solo and we knew immediately it was Wes and then the tenor player starting playing and we were both blown away because he was really cooking and we couldn’t figure out who it was. It was, of course, Johnny Griffin. And now I am listening to this beautiful near mint copy of this record again and, ah, what a nice way to start a gorgeous Sunday morning. Anyway, back to the auction items:
The next one I purchased was listed as: Stan Getz, Three Verve LPS with Trumpeter labels. Price $40.95. These turned out to be For Musicians Only with Dizzy Gillespie and Sonny Stitt;

Let’s catch up on some of the Prestige jazz vinyl we’ve been watching on eBay:

Webster Young, For Lady, Prestige 7106. This was an original New York pressing as well. The record was only VG, while the cover was M-. The price was $213.50.
Eric Dolphy at the Five Spot, Prestige 7294. This was an original yellow label pressing with

More on EBay Today
Feb 17, 2009 Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay, Prestige
Here are a few other items we’re watching on eBay today. Actually, we’ll start with an item that we’re selling: Hampton Hawes, For Real, Contemporary 3589. This is an original yellow label pressing in VG+/VG condition. It is currently priced at $25. Also noteworthy about this album is the touching obituary for bassist Scott La Faro, who was killed in a car accident July 6, 1961 as the liner notes to the album were being printed. There’s also a nice picture of La Faro on the back cover. We have several other items closing today and tomorrow, so please take a look.
From other sellers, here are some items worth watching:

After a week of slow days, it was quite a pleasant surprise to log on today and find a large number of nice collectibles to watch, and perhaps even a couple on which to place a bid or two. So, without further ado, here are some items for the Jazz Collector files, and, eventually, for the Jazz Collector Price Guide:
Thelonious Monk, Monk, Prestige 7053. This is an original pressing with the cover art designed by Andy Warhol. The seller provides some interesting background on the cover. For instance, it notes that the cover was hand-written by Warhol’s mother, which we never knew. For the seller, it always pays to have nice detailed information like this. This record, which looks to be in M- condition, is currently priced at $540.
Miles Davis, Bags’ Groove, Prestige 7109. This is listed as a yellow label. We asked the seller which address and it is a New Jersey address, so be aware. The record and cover both seem to be in VG+ condition. The current price is about $50.
Dave Bailey Quintet, Reaching Out, Jazztime 003. This is an original pressing. The record seems to be in M- condition and the cover looks about VG. The current price is $305.
Here’s one that wouldn’t normally hit our radar screen, but we’re sure some of you Jazz Collector readers out there will be interested: Albert Ayler, New York Eye and Ear Control, ESP 1016. This looks to be in M-/VG++ condition. The current price is $91.
Here are a bunch more from today:

Things are slow again on eBay, although there are a few decent items coming up, and a few nice items that recently closed. Coming up: The seller gonerrecords has a few nice items closing in a few hours including Lou Donaldson, The Time is Right, Blue Note 4025. This one is in VG+ condition and is in the $170 price range. Also from this seller: Lou Donaldson, LD + 3, Blue Note 4012. This one is also in VG+ condition and is now in the $85 price range. If you click these items, also look at the vendor’s other items for more jazz vinyl collectibles. Not much else on the high-end later today, but you might want to keep an eye on this one: Lucy Ann Polk, Lucky Lucy Ann, Mode 115. This is currently at about $50. We’ve seen it go for as high as $103 in the Jazz Collector Price Guide. Getting a jump on tomorrow, take a look at this one: Booker Little Four, United Artists 4034. This is an original pressing, and the price is still pretty low.
Among some of the nice items that just sold today are:
Bud Powell, Bud!, Blue Note 1571. This was an original pressing. The record was M-, the cover was VG++, the price was $271.

Nov 20, 2008 Blue Note, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay, Norgran, Prestige
Here are some interesting items closing today on eBay: Most of you have probably noticed this one, since it’s a featured listing: Curtis Fuller Volume 3, Blue Note 1583. This is an original pressing. It seems to be in VG+ condition, both record and cover. This one has Sonny Clark on piano and is a pretty nice collectible. The current price is $340.
If you’re desperate for a copy of Eddie Costa, House of Blue Lights, Dot 3206, there’s one closing soon on eBay for a Buy-It-Now price of $420. The record is M- and the cover is VG+.
Euclid Records is back again with some nice items, including this one: Sonny Rollins with the Modern Jazz Quartet, Prestige 7020. This is an original New York pressing with the original orange cover. Careful readers will note that Jazz Collector recently posed the question to our audience on the orange cover versus the yellow cover and one of our readers reminded us that if it’s orange it must be original. This one is in near mint condition and is currently priced at $629.

Here’s an update on some of the items we’ve been watching lately on eBay:
Kenny Dorham and Jackie McLean, Inta Somethin’, Pacific Jazz 41. This was an original pressing in M-/VG++ condition. We had targeted this is a potential bargain. It sold for $71. What do you think? Definitely a very nice record.
I have a feeling this one also may have been a bargain: Eric Dolphy, Out There, Prestige New Jazz 8252. This was an original purple label pressing in M- condition. Price. $103.51
Charles Mingus at the Bohemia, Debut 123. This was an original pressing in M-/VG+ condition. We expected it to go for a high price and it did, also beating the dealer’s reserve. Price: $460

Sep 18, 2008 10-Inch LPs, Blue Note, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay, Prestige
We’re working on a post to catch up on some of the interesting items we’ve been watching on eBay this week. In the meantime, here are a few items that are closing today that are worth viewing:
Our friends at Euclid Records have this nice item: Paul Chambers Quintet, Blue Note 1564. This is in beautiful condition and, as of now is going for $660.
Here’s another rare Blue Note: Johnny Griffin, The Congregation, Blue Note 1580. This is the original pressing, with the nice cover by Andy Warhol.
Finally, take a look at this one: Jimmy Raney Ensemble, Prestige New Jazz 1103. This is a 10-inch LP and the condition is not great. It’s from a reputable dealer and he has priced it at $99.99 minimum. I’m watching this to see if it sells at all, based on the condition and the start price.
Keep an eye on the site: We’ll be doing a few posts today on some of the interesting eBay auctions that closed earlier this week.

A Weekend With Jackie, Basie, Warhol, Monk
Sep 12, 2008 Album Covers, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay, Prestige, Riverside
As promised, here are a few more records to keep an eye on this weekend, as well as some sellers who have interesting items.
Jackie McLean, A Long Drink of the Blues, Prestige New Jazz 8253. I‘ve always loved the second side of this LP, with Jackie in a quartet setting doing Embraceable You, I Cover the Waterfront and These Foolish things. This particular copy of the record is an original, but not in great condition. Sometimes, if the price is right, it makes sense to bid on something like this, hoping that the record sounds better than it looks. In any case, this is a record worth looking at and it’s also worth looking at some of the other items from this seller this weekend. A few weeks ago we wrote about a Joe Newman record selling for a high price because of a cover illustration by Andy Warhol. Now here’s another album with a Warhol cover, Count Basie, RCA 1112. This is being sold by Atomic Records, one of the largest eBay jazz sellers.

Dolphy, $800 and Counting
Jun 5, 2008 Blue Note, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay, Prestige
I was watching this record on eBay — Eric Dolphy, At The Five Spot, Volume 1, New Jazz 8260. Wasn’t necessarily planning to bid on it, although at $80 with 24 hours left it seemed like it might be attractive. I was surprised to look this morning and see that the record is up over $800. That’s the highest price I’ve seen for this record. It’s interesting to note whether we’re seeing that with other records as well — new highs — or whether this is just because the record is in great condition and it’s from a very reputable seller. Something to keep an eye on.

Summer Slowdown in Jazz LP Prices?
Jul 28, 2005 Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay, Prestige
I keep waiting for signs of a summer slowdown in pricing and keep getting mixed signals. The other day there was the Thelonious Monk record that sold for more than $3,000 and, a couple of days later, the heavy prices on the two Horace Silver LPs. No slowdown there. But yesterday, there were some signs that things are not as hot as usual. For instance, here are several albums from Atomic_records that failed to even meet the reserve prices:
Benny Golson, Gone with Golson, New Jazz 8235. Top bid of $67.
Sonny Stitt, Stitt’s Bits, Prestige 7133. Top bid of $89.99
Jimmy Raney, A, Prestige 7089. Top bid of $51.
Art Farmer Septet, Prestige 7031. Top bid of $62.5
My advice, if you’re a buyer, is to look up earlier pricing on our Price Guides and underbid on some items – particularly if you use sniping software. This might be a time to find some eBay bargains.

Quiet Kenny and a Few Blue Notes

eBaying
Missed out on a few interesting items the past few days. In some cases the prices got a little too rich for my blood, in others I forgot to bid. My friend recommends buying Sniper software, which I plan to do today. I’ll let you know how it works out. Anyway, it was a busy weekend on eBay for some high-end collectibles. Here are some examples.
Kenny Dorham, Quiet Kenny, New Jazz 8225
This was an original pressing in M- condition, record and cover. Price: $787.
If you watch eBay very closely, your point of view can get distorted. Case in point:

Original Pressings, Reasonable Prices
Jun 28, 2004 10-Inch LPs, Blue Note, Clef, Impulse, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay, Prestige, Verve
Back from the weekend, so it’s time to catch up on eBay. Here are some of the records we were watching.
Donald Byrd Sextet, Transition 5. This was an original pressing in what seemed to be M-/VG++ condition. The LP had the booklet and sold for $300.
Eric Dolphy at the Five Spot, Volume 1, New Jazz 8260. This was an original pressing with the purple label. The seller listed it in M-/M- condition, although there seemed to be ringwear on the cover, based on the photo. Still the price was $278.99.

Another Day, Another Thousand Records
Jun 9, 2004 10-Inch LPs, Blue Note, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay, Prestige, Riverside
Another day, another thousand or so records on eBay. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to go through them all and it may as well be me. Here are some of the items we’re watching over the next couple of days: Don Sleet, All Members, Jazzland 45
After you click this item do yourself a favor and click “View Seller’s Other Items.” You will see some great records in great condition that will sell for high prices.
This is another dealer with some good items this week. Art Taylor, Taylor’s Wailers, Prestige 7117
One of these days we will get this record, but not this week. The price tag of $450 is already a little too steep.

Quiet Kenny at a Bargain Price?
Apr 26, 2004 Blue Note, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay, Prestige
Case in point: I look at this and wonder if the buyer got a bargain at $787. Here’s why: Last week the same item in virtually the same condition sold for $1,261. It’s hard to conceive of $787 for one record as a bargain, but the reality is that prices are set by the market, especially on eBay. Seeing this record sell twice in the past week breaks my heart. I had an original mint pressing of this LP, which I sold years ago for a fraction of these prices. I used the money partially to buy a boat. Two months later, the boat sank. To this day I’ve never been able to replace Quiet Kenny. Here are a few more examples of wild market swings. This weekend one dealer sold the following records for the following prices:
Dexter Gordon, Dexter Calling, Blue Note 4083. Record and cover were M-. Price: $395
Sonny Rollins, Moving Out, Prestige 7058. Also M-. Price: $295
Donald Byrd, The Cat Walk, Blue Note 4075. Also M-. Price: $325
Dexter Gordon, Doin’ Allright, Blue Note 4077. Also M-. Price: $510
Pretty hefty prices, right? Here’s what’s more remarkable: One of these was not an original pressing: The Rollins LP had the New Jersey label, not the New York label. Also of interest of the weekend: The very rare Jackie McLean record on Ad Lib was up for sale. The record was in G condition, the cover VG-. The bidding topped out at $588.75, but the record didn’t sell because it didn’t meet the dealer’s reserve price. This is another one of those records I sold years ago to buy that damn boat. Ugh! At Jazzcollector.com we keep an ongoing tally of collectible record prices on eBay. We update it at least once a week. Here’s a look at the latest prices. Here’s a look at the larger database.
Upcoming on eBay
There always seem to be items of interest on eBay. I fully believe that if you had enough money, time and interest, you could buy up the entire Blue Note and Prestige catalogues in near mint condition. Anyway, here are some of the items we’re watching over the next couple of days:
John Coltrane, Giants Steps, Atlantic 1311. This is an original mono pressing with the bulls-eye logo. Last time I looked the price was $99. I recently bought a stereo copy with the bulls-eye logo for $50. This dealer also has a nice copy of Soultrain, Prestige 7142 and some other good items. After you look at Giant Steps click view seller’s other items to see what else he has.
The dealer who sold Quiet Kenny also has some interesting items this week. He sold a bunch of original Blue Notes and Prestiges last week, all in beautiful condition. His next auction this week is Hank Mobley, Peckin’ Time, Blue Note 1574. The start price is $850. After you look at this, also check out his other items.
Here are a few more upcoming items to whet your appetite:
Bud Powell, The Scene Changes, Blue Note 4009
Ray Draper, Tuba Sounds, Prestige 7096
Serge Chaloff, Complete Sessions, Mosaic 147
We can’t vouch for any of these dealers, but they all seem reputable and we’ve had successful dealings with some of them. In all cases, you should look and see what else they have for auction this week. It never hurts to look.
