Jazz Vinyl, Insanely Rare Or Rarely Insane?
Apr 7, 2012 $1000 Records, Prestige
Here are the results of a few more jazz vinyl auctions we were watching:
Hank Mobley, Mobley’s Message, Prestige 7061. This looked to be an original pressing with the deep grooves and New York address on the label. It’s always nice to see more pictures, but this one looked legitimate. The record and cover were both listed in M- condition and the bidding ended at $1,027.99.
Here’s a random rare remnant from the insanely rare offerings of bobdjukic: Sonny Rollins Plays, Period 1204. This looked to be an original pressing. The condition was probably in the range of VG++ for the record and the cover. The price was $798.77.
Tommy Flanagan, The Cats, New Jazz 8217. This looks like an original pressing with the purple labels and the deep grooves. The record, of course, features John Coltrane as a sideman. The record and cover were both listed in VG+ condition and the price was $381.20.

Some Jazz Vinyl For the $1,000 Bin
Feb 15, 2012 Blue Note
Yesterday we talked about some lower priced collectibles: Today, let’s go in the opposite direction.
Donald Byrd, Byrd Jazz, Transition 5. This was an original pressing that looked to be in M- condition, although the seller described it as being in very good condition. He seemed unfamiliar with the grading system most of us use. The record sold for $2,370.67, so others expected that it is in M- condition as well.
Lee Morgan, Candy, Blue Note 1590. This was an original pressing in M- condition for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $1,915.
Sonny Clark, Sonny’s Crib, Blue Note 1576. This was an original pressing in VG+ condition for the record and VG++ condition for the cover. It sold for $1,650.
Sonny Rollins Plays, Period 1204. This one was in M- condition for the record and VG for the cover. It sold for $1,191.88. I think this is the only Rollins record from the 50s I don’t own in an original pressing. Hopefully one day we can correct that oversight. But not for $1,200.

A Dash of Pepper, Mad Thad, Jackie’s Bag & More
Aug 22, 2011 Blue Note
It isn’t often I see records or even labels I’m not familiar with, but here’s one that was on eBay this weekend. It was listed as an
Art Pepper record: Mucho Calor, Andex S3002. Not only have I never seen the record before, I’ve never seen the Andex label. I have a strong feeling this is some kind of reissue or compilation, but not sure what the root label is. It’s a stereo pressing, but it’s supposed to be 1957, which is pre-stereo. Plus, with the other artists listed, it doesn’t look like an Art Pepper record nor does it look like a record date that was led by Pepper. This one was probably VG++ for the record and VG+ for the cover and it sold for $87.66. I’m sure someone out in the Jazz Collector audience will be able to shed a little light on this one.
This one fetched quite a nice price: Thad Jones, Mad Thad, Period 1208. Admittedly, this is a hard to find record, but I haven’t seen it often go for this price. The record was in VG++ condition and the cover was VG. The price was $610 and there were 27 bids, which is a pretty high number.
This one would typically get a higher price, but the listing wasn’t very complete, so purchasing the record was a gamble:

Catching Up: What’s a Promo Worth?
Jan 3, 2010 Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay, Promo Copies, Riverside
Here’s an update on some odds and ends we’ve been watching on eBay:
Zoot Sims, Stretching Out, United Artists 4023. This was an original deep groove mono pressing. It was a promo copy, with a promo stamp and the white label and it was in M- condition, for both the record and the cover. The price was $124. What do you think: Does the promo stamp enhance the value of a record for you, or detract, or neither. I recall in the world of rock albums, the promo stamp was always considered a good thing, but I’ve never heard that one way or another in the jazz world. Which leads me to this LP: Bill Evans, Waltz For Debby, Riverside 399. This was an original pressing with the white promo label. The record was

For the $1,000 Bin: Newk and Hank
Nov 9, 2009 $1000 Records, Blue Note, Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay
Whilst we were at the theater this weekend, or watching football, a few more records on eBay sauntered into the $1,000 bin, neither for the first time. They were: Sonny Rollins Plays, Period 1204. This was an original pressing and it was listed in M- condition for both the vinyl and the cover. The price was $1,285. We’ve seen this previously sell for $2,000 in the Jazz Collector Price Guide. Also re-entering the $1,000 win was this: Hank Mobley, Hank, Blue Note 1568. This is the one we were watching that had a starting price of just about $2,000. It was an original pressing. The vinyl was listed in VG++ condition and the cover was listed as VG+. The starting price was $1,999.99 and that was the sale price as well. Sometimes I’m skeptical if a record gets only one bid, but this

Some Odds & Ends: Konitz, Brubeck, Newk
Oct 28, 2009 Jazz Vinyl, Jazz Vinyl on eBay, Price Guide
While we’re catching up on adding items to the Jazz Collector Price Guide, we figured we’d share a few more odds and ends with you. This is one you don’t normally expect to sell for more than $300: Lee Konitz with Warne Marsh, Atlantic 1217. This was an original black label pressing in M- condition and sold for $311. I have to give the seller a lot of credit for this one. He took an absolutely crystal-clear picture and he did a very nice job of describing the condition of the LP. It really catches your eye and makes you want the LP. Sometimes, presentation is everything.
Here’s one you almost never see going for a big price: Dave Brubeck Time Out, Columbia 8192. This was one of the most popular jazz LPs ever and
