The Sound of Sonny Rollins: The Winner Is . . .
Okay, it’s time to announce the winner of Jazz Collector’s latest giveaway. This time, you may recall, we are giving away a copy of Sonny Rollins, The Sound of Sonny, Riverside 241. This is not an original pressing and is an OJC pressing. Yet it is in near mint condition and it is great jazz vinyl featuring some fantastic Rollins from the mid-1950s. We had put this up as a way of honoring Rollins in the wake of yet another snub by the Kennedy Center Honors. Anyway, as with all of our giveaways, all you have to do to be eligible to win is to comment on the Jazz Collector site, anywhere, in response to anything, as long as the comment is made during the duration of the contest. The eligible contestants this time are:
Jason Sweet, Bethellodge, Blipp, Ron Rue, Bob Brooks, Doug, Michel, Maarten Kools, Geraint, Don-Lucky, Ceedee, Hyder, Ian Thomas and Troy Grooms. As always, there will be one winner, selected at random by the lovely Mrs. Jazz Collector. Here we go. The names are written down . . . strewn about the desk . . . mixed up . . . mixed up again . . . and again . . . here comes Mrs. JC . . . her hand is in the pile . . . she is choosing a name . . . and that name is . . . Bob Brooks.
Congratulations, Bob. This is a great record and, we’re sure, it will make a nice addition to your jazz collection. It’s also free and we even pay for the shipping. Just send an email to us at al@jazzcollector.com and we’ll make the arrangements to ship the record to you. For everyone else, you can start commenting on the site now and still be eligible for our next giveaway, which we will announce either later today or early tomorrow. We’re still deciding on something interesting and appropriate.
I would just like to thank everyone who made this possible… Really thanks for the record though. It makes me feel better about this hobby in general. When I commented before on the site, I was worried if the two blue notes I won were original pressings. Well it turns out they were, but it doesn’t matter, I never got them in the mail! So not only am I too young to recognize a first press, I was naive enough to have the first blue notes I ever bought sent through media mail. Ouch. Maybe now my luck has reversed. Thanks, this helps soften that blow.
That’a tough story on those Blue Notes. I hope it was a reputable dealer. I’ve been using media mail for years and have never had a non-delivery problem.
Congrats Bob!
I hope my day will come too (i.e. winning an LP from this great website)
Keep the good work guys!
always looking forward to news!
enjoy the music!
love from Singapore!
a friend of mine hinted at the existence of a blog named “JazzWax”, run by Marc Myers.
Most of you will know this blog, for me it was a nice discovery.
I dug the recent interview done with SONNY ROLLINS and esp. the background of one of my all time favourite albums “WAY OUT WEST”. This is compulsory reading for Rollins students.
Another feature is the re-appearance of Ronnell Bright. How the life of this man has changed since he was given the status in his community of an acknowledged artist.
