On Ebay: Evaluating and Re-Evaluating
Had an interesting eBay experience today. I’m selling a bunch of records now on eBay. Here’s one, for example: Art Blakey, A Night at Birdland Volume 2, Blue Note 1522. This is a Lexington Avenue pressing if anyone is interested. Anyway, a potential buyer asked about another record I had listed. He wanted to know if there was any surface noise. I had listed the item in VG+ condition. When I listed it last week, I listened to one side and it was clean. When I got the question this morning, I listened to the other side, which did, indeed, have some surface noise. I felt like my original listing was a bit misleading, so I ended the auction early and
decided to relist the record. At this point, I’d rather relist the record and be accurate than have to deal with an unsatisfied buyer and perhaps have to issue a refund. In any case, there are times when records are going to slip through the cracks, but it’s better to catch them before they go out than have a disgruntled customer.
you are fully right, although one cannot always playgrade all the records one puts up for sale, better be prudent than taking risks with unsatisfied (irascible) buyers.
btw, this BLP 1522 is my very first 12″ album bought in 1957 I guess.
Always been a fan of this two cover.. unfortunaltely never been able to get it…
(New records added on my blog !! please check !)
So the cover in the picture is an alternate and this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/ART-BLAKEY-QUINTET-Original-1954-BLUE-NOTE-10-LP-5037-SUPERB-/390596287559?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item5af15a5c47) is the original? I’ve always wondered which came first. I have the later reissue on Liberty if I remember correctly.
the 10″ came before the 12″. The 12″ cover shown is the first version. Later issues, before Liberty, have an alternate cover using the pictures from the 10″ sleeve design.
Thanks! I didn’t even notice that the picture above on this blog was a 12″. Either way I think I like that cover best. Seems to go for about the same money as the 10″.
