A Blue Note Favorite: Is It The One?
Here’s an interesting item I was watching on eBay. Art Blakey, Buhaina’s Delight, Blue Note 4104. This was an original pressing with the NY USA label. It was in M- condition for both the record and the cover and it sold for $172.01, which is relatively high for this record. Ever since I got into that Blue Note head a couple of weeks ago, I’ve been thinking about doing a post on my favorite Blue Note album, which Downbeat did about a year ago with a bunch of jazz artists. I will try to dig out my copy and do a subsequent post. My problem with choosing my favorite Blue Note is this: Every time I think I come up with the one album, I think about another and, to be honest, I’m having a hard time settling on one. I will say, however, that this album is a top contender, is definitely a finalist and may even emerge as the winner. We’ll see. Hopefully I will get around to doing the post. I have an original pressing of this in VG++ condition, I thought about bidding on this copy and, in fact, I was disappointed to see that I could have won it at a reasonable price. Now that is either dedication or insanity, which are probably one of the same to a disturbed Jazz Collector such as me.

Just a thought; as I now time is always a constrain. I enjoy reading your entries. Will you consider publishing an article on your web page about vinyl vs. Cds? About the sound quality of the latest remastered RVG series vs. the original vinyls?. Just an example: at least to my ears the RVG copy of Coltrane’s Black Pearls sounds much better than my old Prestige Lp copy, which has pops and surface noise. I understand the value of owning an original pressing; but what will you choose for daily listening? Also the portability of the CD vs. the Lp?

The cascading lines in both Backstage Sally and Reincarnation Blues are a pleasure. But Moon River always wrecks it for me.

If you’re taking suggestions, I’d love to see more “Jazz Collector’s Essentials”. The one you did for Cannonball was a great read, and spurred some good conversation. What are your Essential Jazz Messengers albums? 🙂
