Really, McCoy?

mccoyTime to catch up on some more jazz vinyl auctions starting with this one sent by our friend CeeDee: McCoy Tyner, The Real McCoy, Blue Note 4264. This was an original Liberty pressing listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $171.05, quite a high price for a later Liberty, although this one has the advantage of at least looking like a Blue Note from the pre-Liberty era. We’ll ask CeeDee why he felt that this one should be called out for scrutiny?

I had thought this one might make the $2,000 bin, but it fell short: Tina Brooks, True Blue, Blue Note 4041. This was an original pressing in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $1,790. This one also made it into the $1,000 bin: Kenny Dorham, Quiet Kenny, New Jazz 8225. This was an original pressing in VG+ condition for the record and just VG for the cover. It sold for $1,035.

Kenny Dorham, Afro-Cuban, Blue Note 4056. This was an original 10-inch pressing listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $460.65.

  • WOW! My first thought is…That sure is an incredible amount of corn for a Liberty BN in VG+ ! But it’s not a record I come across often. But personally I would not pay any where near that for a Liberty BN. Great music on this LP. Joe is fantastic on it…

  • The Real McCoy was described as VG+ but the seller states: “with one long visible scuff that is barely audible if at all. It does have some other scuffs and plays with some surface noise. which according the Goldmine standard, brings it down to VG..$171 Dollars?? LOL..

  • Al,I’m with ADAMSKI in that I’ve had so little luck finding a mono copy of this lp. I don’t see myself paying that kind of do-re-mi for one,but-if it were in “minty” shape(and I’d sold a few goodies myself that week)…who knows? McCoy’s “Blues On The Corner” playing in my crib on original mono vinyl?
    “Yes,please!”

  • Right. I think the price is outrageous, but I’ve never seen one either. Desperate times + too much $$ = $171 for a Liberty.

  • The bottom line is it’s extremely rare in mono because of the release year being in the twilight of mono. Only 8 popsike returns for “mccoy tyner real mono” (quite low for popsike), the cheapest being $67 and the all-time high being $210. Yes, $171 sure does seem like a lot for VG+ for this title. Third place’s max bid was a bit more “reasonable” at $116. But we all know that all it takes is two fat cats to go after the same record and there’s no telling what will happen.

  • Mono of this title is pretty hard to find. No sticker, alas.

  • It looks like the buyer went all in for A Real McCoy Mono. I’ve lost to the winning bidder in the recent past (I think). That user must be going for an all-or-nothing jazz grab with the seller.

Or of course, you have to remember that this item has the following particulars:

    The ORIGINAL Liberty label! Gasp!
A record seller since 1976! We have a post-gas crisis seller on our hands. The best years for vinyl! Oh my!
    A conservative grader! Wow!
    Let me catch my breath.

    Checks all of my boxes.

  • Outrageous price for a Liberty, but not so outrageous if you consider this one as this one as one of of Mc Coy’s best, one of Blue Note’s best – and a true rarity in Mono. Another question is : isnt it outrageous for a Mono copy of the Liberty era ?

  • What is outrageous to me is I actually prefer the stereo Black b mid 70’s Liberty Tyner over the Mono Original I have, both near mint. Might be time to sell?

This is not the usual for me, typically I do prefer the mono. I do have a NY USA Stereo McLean Bluesnik I like better than the mono original.

  • That’s exactly what i meant. From my experience, mono Liberty are not very exciting.

  • Michel: “Outrageous price for a Liberty, but not so outrageous if you consider this one as this one as one of of Mc Coy’s best, one of Blue Note’s best – and a true rarity in Mono”..

    i agree

  • I had a Liberty Pressing “NO Van Gelder” Stamp and its the worst Blue Note Pressing That I have ever owned. I’m extremely happy with My Japanese King.

  • Migkiller1971: that’s interesting…didn’t know there were Liberty label Blue Notes without Van Gelder mastering that at one point in time were mastered by him.

  • I see the mono version from time to time, not so rare to say. euclidrecords sold a VG++ Mono version of the Real McCoy back on the 3rd of Jan for $39.99, I’m really satisfied with my King Pressing and if I knew it brought that kind of money. I would have flipped it. Outrageous and Crazy people out there.

  • Migkiller, I just checked out your YouTube page. That Rollins Vol. 1 sounds KILLER! Good job with the needle drop 🙂
