A Big Jazz Collector Weekend

This promises to be quite a weekend for Jazz Collector. Today ย and tomorrow I will have a table at the WFMU Record Fair in New York. If you’re in town, please come and visit.

More important: Last night I drove from New York to Baltimore to look at a collection. I will write about it later in the weekend but, suffice to say, my living room is inundated with vinyl.

Here are a few titles to pique your interest and whet your appetite:

Tommy Flanagan Overseas

Jutta Hipp with Zoot Sims

Elmo Hope, Informal Jazz

Jackie McLean, Jackie’s Pal

Not to mention, 15 10-inch Blue Notes. Nearly everything pristine, much of it in its original packaging with the rice paper sleeve and loose plastic bags. I am quite a happy camper.

  • Not to be outdone, I will be at the Atlanta record show on Sunday, digging through piles of rockabilly, country and old Molly Hatchett records in search of jazz gold.

  • I will be hitting the yard sales out here in California digging thru Doris Day and Mitch Miller. The best I expect to find is a VG copy of Time Outโ€ฆ.not a M- copy of Overseas. Damn.

  • I live in Baltimore. Man did I miss out ๐Ÿ™

  • I’ll be there tonight. Heading out soon. What table?

  • I am chasing a craigslist copy of Harlem River Drive and a few other soul/latin pieces. Nothing to compare with a monster Blue Note score…

  • I’m having a monster weekend myself. Taking over some records from a collector.
    – Thad Jones, The Magnificent Thad Jones
    – Thad Jones, Detroit-New York Junction
    – Doug Watkins, Watkins At Large
    – Donald Byrd, Byrd’s Eye View
    – Sonny Clark, Dial “S” for Sonny
    – George Wallington, At the Bohemia
    – Eric Dolphy, Outward Bound
    – Howard McGhee, Dusty Blue

  • WFMU was a delight. I came away with some great items, including two absolutely pristine original Impulses from you, Al!

It was a pleasure to meet you, and I’d love to stop by the JC basement store sometime if it’s still operating. Cheers!

  • Alright, Al, since I couldn’t be at the WFMU fair (it’s a bit too much for me to fly from The Netherlands to the U.S. to attend), you owe me a good story with a lot of photos of the collection that you picked up in Baltimore. Can’t wait!

  • This WFMY was great for me. I came on friday night and went as usual to Euclid, just found a Thad Jones on BN, VG- for $99.99… really disappointing. I however made some good contact with a belgian seller. He had some mint Blue Note pressing from a radio station. Unfortunately all with stickers and note. Again, records and cover in stone mint condition. Asking price $600+. Too much for my taste, he told me to come back today. The guy was desperate to sell his BN collection. He had more in his hotel room…We met an hour ago outside the fair and guess what I purchased his WHOLE BN collection for a (killer) price !!!!! I couldn’t to share with you. Thad Jones, Kenny Burrell, Horace Parlan, Louis Smith… and Hank Mobley 1568. MINT !

  • Joshua, congrats on the BN score! Curious to what ypu mean by “Unfortunately all with stickers and note”?

  • Hey Joshua, photos!! We want proof! Congratulations! ๐Ÿ˜€

  • Radio stickers on the label. And DJ note on the back. Again Record, cover are MINT. No (spindle) marks.

How can I attach pictures ?

  • Congrats Joshua. I usually try not to go to strange foreign men’s hotel rooms in NYC loaded with cash, but again this is just a testament to our collective desperation to score collectibles.

  • OF course, these comments coming from someone who bought 20 original prestiges from a guy clearly needing drug money looking to sell off his fathers collection.

  • And in response to DaveS: recently I acquired Milt Jackson, BLP 1509 in superb condition for $75 (Lex Ave, deep groove, flat edge, the whole nine) but the seller probably forgot that there was an old Prestige catalogue hidden in the sleeve of the record.

It’s only four pages, but still I decided to scan them all and put them all in one, convenient PDF file to share with everybody here at Jazzcollector.

Please make sure to click THIS LINK and flip through it; everyone should also be able to download the full PDF. Enjoy, everyone; it may be old news to some of y’all, but for me it’s a true gem ๐Ÿ™‚

  • This one’s for Joshua: you can email as much photos as you want to me, I will then make sure to put all the pictures into one, convenient online gallery for everyone here with a tailor made link.

Please feel free to send your photos to: manmatty[AT]gmail[DOT]com

Believe me, it’ll be a treat for everyone, especially that 1568, you lucky so and so! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • At the same time there has-been a record fair in Utrecht, Netherland. The best record fair in Europe. Some of the records that have been exposed in NM condition were: Kenny Dorham Quiet Kenny, Lee Morgan Candy, Tina Brooks True Blue, Bent Jaedig on Debut, Paul Gonsalves Boom-Jackie-Boom-Chick, Barney Wilen Tilt ……

  • Hey Mattyman, thanks so much for sharing your copy of that Prestige catalogue; very kind of you to do so. It’s true that perhaps there are a few collectors who may already have a copy of this, but with me living in New Zealand, the likelihood of ever coming across a copy is pretty much non-existent.
Also congrats Joshua, this is the stuff Jazz Collector dreams are made of. I need to get my backside over to the States!

  • I enjoy all the heart-palpitating tales of sales and acquisitions from the big event! As this Midwest youngster peruses the polka piles in search of the holy grail, I’ll remain optimistic based on your Blue Note stories! Thanks for the download, Matty man!

  • Daryl, don’t fret. I hear polka first pressings are gonna be all the rage in ’14!(“Yeah,that’s the ticket!”)

  • Glad y’all like the Prestige catalogue scan, fellas. (For those who missed it, just go up a few comments for the download link).

And Joshua, like I said, you can email your photos to me (my email is also in a previous comment) – I’ll make sure to put ’em all in a gallery for everyone to enjoy.

  • Joshua….we definitely want proof mate!
    Not that we don’t believe you!! ( i don’t!) ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Love the passion Mattyman. Thanks for the scans…
those little things are lovely when you find them inside record sleeves.

  • Mattyman:

I have an Impulse insert that I would be happy to share. Can I scan it and send it to you?

  • The Atlanta record show was ok, not great. Picked up a nice Ernie Henry original Seven Standards for $20, about 6 NYC BNs without the ears and Coltrane Acension that I couldn’t pass up for $20 each (future resale investment opportunity), 2 Django 10s on Angel and Clef for $25 each, and Bud Powell on RCA for $30 (probably overpaid).

  • Mattyman: well done for the upload of the Prestige catalogue.
This catalogue was done short after the transfer of business from Manhattan to Bergenfield. Similar ones exist for New Jazz, SV and BV in different colours.

  • Hello DaveS, please be my guest. Just email whatever you have to me: manmatty[AT]gmail[DOT]com

And if you have the chance: make sure to scan your Impulse insert at at least 300dpi or higher ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Hello Rudolf, thanks, great you like it. I wasn’t aware of the other catalogues though, let alone I knew that this one was made after the move to Bergenfield. You learn something new everyday ๐Ÿ˜€

  • And yes, Adamski, you’re right. I always hope to find a few 100 Dollar bills inside new old records, but a Prestige catalogue inside a Blue Note record? (Almost) even better ๐Ÿ˜›
