A Couple for The $1,000 Bin, And one for the $66 Bin

There were a bunch of interesting jazz vinyl auctions that closed last night, to wit: Red Rodney, Signal S 1206. This looked like an original pressing in perhaps VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover? The seller uses a wide variety of grades that don’t necessarily correspond to the grading language we typically use, so it’s up for interpretation. Hopefully the buyer will be pleased. This one sold for a whopping $1,825.55.

Her’s one for the $2,000 bin: Lee Morgan, Candy, Blue Note 1590. This was an original pressing that looked to be in M- or VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. It sold for $2,111. There was another copy of this record that we mentioned the other day, Blue Note 1590, that was in just VG- condition for the record and cover. We wondered about the eventual price for a record that may not be all that playable. The price was $237.65

How the market has changed through the years: Johnny Hodges, Castle Rock, Norgran 1048. This was an original yellow label pressing. It was in VG+ condition for both the record and the vinyl. It sold for $66. When I started collecting jazz, there seemed to be much more interest from collectors in the original Norgrans. A different era, I guess — but also an opportunity to pick up some of these very nice records at reasonable prices.

  • The 1559 looks like it is worse than VG-. F maybe, judging by the coverphoto.

  • meant 1590 :/

  • Does anyone have this Red Rodney album? I’m very familiar with the three rhythm section players, but only slightly familiar with Red and Ira. I have 2 albums with Ira and one with Red. I see this CD is even very expensive, but I was wondering if this was a great session that I should check out.

  • I’ve never heard the album but Classic Records has an audiophile vinyl reissue of the Red Rodney album available on their website themusic.com for $25.

  • Thanks for the heads up Aaron, I’m gonna order it and check it out.

  • You will discover an exquisite version of “You better go know” on this Signal recording . Don’t know if it justifies the price of the original, but for sure it is priceless music !

  • this Signal was re-issued twice, the first time on Savoy (MG 12148 entitled “Fiery”) and the second time on Onyx. The music is great. With these two rhythm sections you cannot go wrong.

  • I’ll keep an eye out for a more affordable Savoy… thanks!

  • I grabbed a copy of the Red Rodney album on DAD. For those not familiar DAD is an older defunct format that is playable on DVD players. It is high resolution digital(24/96) and I maybe 20 and have enjoyed there sound. This one cost $10, new. So while this DAD is not a collectible nor vinyl, I’d recommend it for the cost to anyone wanting to check out this session. It is a fine session, with the rhythm section stealing it, but Red and Ira playing very well. I got it on Amazon US. It’s way cheaper than the OOP cd and way way cheaper than the original. I ordered it before I saw Rudolf’s post about the Savoy reissue, otherwise I might have tried to track it down. I do recommend this session in any way you can get it.
