A Story Of Blue Notes (And One New Jazz)

hank mobley jazz vinylHere’s some of the jazz vinyl we’re watching on eBay, starting with some Blue Notes:

Sonny Clark, Cool Struttin’, Blue Note 1588. I’m not sure what pressing this is. There are so many Blue Note permutations to consider. This one has deep grooves and ears and RVG and the West 63rd address. One side has no Inc. and no R, the other side has the Inc. and the R. What does that make it? Probably not a first-pressing original, going by the bidding so far. This on is in Ex condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. There are three days left on the auction and bidding is in the $250 range.

This seller has some nice records, including Hank Mobley Sextet, Blue Note 1560. This has the deep grooves and the West 63rd address, which would seem to make it an original pressing. The record is in VG- condition and the cover is VG. Bidding is in the $400 range and the auction closes in three days. VG- condition, to repeat. Not making any judgments. Just pointing it out for future edification.

Here’s a pretty pair:

Herbie Nichols, The Prophetic Volumes 1 and 2, Blue Note 5068 and 5069. You don’t often see these sold as a pair. These both look to be in VG+ condition for the records and covers. In addition, they come with the rare booklet “The Blue Note Story,” which was issued before Blue Note even had a 12-inch catalogue. If you’re curious about The Blue Note Story, click here. The start price for these records and the booklet is $1,100. So far there are no takers.

Just so it’s not an all Blue Note day, here is Jackie McLean, McLean’s Scene, New Jazz 8212. This is an original purple label pressing with the deep grooves. The record and cover are both listed in M- condition. There is only one bid and that is at about $300.

  • I have a feeling that that price for Cool Struttin’s will soar when the snipes come in. It will be an affordable later copy, but it will be much sought after and then will sell for well beyond it’s worth…sort of the way jazz LPs are going lately.

  • All great albums musically! It will be interesting to see what they go for.

i have just never cared much for sonny clark. makes me feel bad, to be honest.

  • Gregory-

It’s funny how music effects people differently. Well, you definitely want to avoid music that makes you feel bad!

    sonny clark
makes you feel bad? as in Waco Jacko Bad or 🙁 ??

  • Gregory The Fish

haha no i meant i feel bad for not liking sonny clark. it’s a weird feeling.

but every time i listen to him i kind of think “why am i not listening to x instead right now?”

  • Dear Gregory The Fish:
Please listen to Sonny’s intro on “Deep Night”(Cool Struttin’),the timeless groove evident on “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was”(Sonny Clark Trio) and the amazing interplay between Sonny,Art Blakey and Grant Green on “It Ain’t Necessarily So”(Grant Green:Complete Quartets),his trio version of “Can’t We Be Friends?”(Standards)…if you still feel ill(not diggin’ SC,that is)seek professional help immediately!

  • The McLean 8212 is not an original. Has narrow deep groves. This one is bound to be an expensive noisy record. With a sharp cover, i must admit. ;-).

  • Maybe Gregory the Fish could listen “Sonia” on the Sonny Clark trio on Time. Or the “Love for Sale” intro on Dexter Gordon’s “Go”. But i must admit that “Cool Struttin” is not definitely not among my favourite Blue Note albums.

  • Michel,
New Jazz has two different widths on the deep groove? Never noticed that. Which came first, is there a catalog number where the change begins or is it a first/second pressing difference?

How about Blue Note, Riverside or Prestige?

    Thanks,
    Terry
