A Supreme Love Supreme, Prestiges and Blue Notes

Still here. Still watching jazz vinyl on eBay. Here’s one: John Coltrane, A Love Supreme, Impulse A-77.  Gotta give the seller credit for being loquacious and highly descriptive about this record. We know why he is selling it, what equipment he played it on, how loud. It is one of the more unique listings I’ve seen. Anyway, after reading all that, I would guess, as the seller does, that the record is in VG+ condition, that it is an original pressing and the cover is probably in VG+ or VG++ condition. The start price is $400 and so far there are no bidders with a bit more than a day left on the auction. The seller says he is ambivalent about selling the record because he is afraid to play it, so maybe the market will make it an easy decision for him to keep it.

Tommy Flanagan Overseas, Prestige 7134. This is an original New York yellow label. The record and cover are listed as VG+. Bidding is in the $900 range with more than five days left. From the same seller: Thelonious Monk Trio, Prestige 7027. This is also an original New York yellow. Record and cover are both listed as VG++. Start price is $200 and so far there are no bids.

Now for some of the Blue Notes:

Joe Henderson, Page One, Blue Note 4140. This is an original New York USA mono. Discerning buyers would probably grade the record as VG based on the seller’s description. The cover is listed as VG+. Bidding is in the $150 range with more than five days left. From the same seller: Duke Jordan, Flight to Jordan, Blue Note 4046. This is an original West 63rd mono pressing. The record is VG+ and the cover is EX. Bidding is in the $700 range.

Cannonball Adderley, Somethin’ Else, Blue Note 1595. This is an original West 63rd mono pressing, listed in M- condition for the record and EX for the cover. Bidding is at $600 with more than a day left on the auction.

From the seller Carolinasoul we have Hank Mobley, Soul Station, Blue Note 4031. This is an original West 63rd mono listed in VG condition for both the record and the cover. Bidding is in the $160 range with more than six days left. I’m going to go out on a limb here and predict that this record, despite being VG, will end up in the $1,000 bin. Pretty safe limb, I think.

  • The Coltrane is a slight second.

  • Clifford Allen

Every early copy of A-77 I’ve owned or auditioned has had some level of annoying surface noise. At this point I’d rather have a 70s Japanese issue, just in terms of a quiet pressing.

  • two weeks ago, Milano vinyl fair, there was an identical VG+/VG+ copy offered: € 1500,00. No further comment required except that A 77 A isn’t a first, as Mark stated.

  • Interesting that seller of “ALS” has 1 lp and all this camera stuff. And re first, how you know it’s not a first? Don’t think label should be marked Am-Par as were the very early number Impulses. To me, that was the label that was first. And then changed to the orange black design. Obviously there’s more to the story.
Anyway, I’m just curious as I always thought only one orange/black label, not a series of variations. In the overall scheme of matters It’s I guess Not really important as all my records are long gone and my “ALS’s” were all white label mono promos.

  • gregory the fish

the suffix -77 on the label indicates a second press.

  • Gregory means the suffix-A
    first: A-77
    second: A-77-A (A-77-B)
ALS is the last number without any suffix.

  • Thanks Mark and G-the-Fish and dotj. I Learn something new every day.

  • Found this ALS version in VG+ state last year for around €70.. no need to search any further! 🙂
