A Trio of Blue Notes For a Monday Morning
Here’s some of the jazz vinyl we’re watching on eBay this week:
Here we go again: Hank Mobley, Blue Note 1568. This is an original pressing in M- condition for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover. It closes soon and the bidding is in the $2,150 range, except it has yet to reach the seller’s reserve price. I noticed on the listing that the seller points to Jazz Collector for help in ascertaining the value. We’re pleased an flattered and also reminded that we better upgrade our Price Guide this week.
Here are a couple more nice Blue Notes, starting with: Paul Chambers, Whims of Chambers, Blue Note 1534. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. Tough to find these Lexington Avenue Blue Notes in such nice shape. The price for this one has already surpassed $500 and we won’t be surprised if this one goes beyond $1,000. Not just an original Blue Note, but also has the presence of John Coltrane. Also, Johnny Griffin, A Blowing Session, Blue Note 1559. The vinyl on this one is only in VG condition and the cover is VG++. Still, the bidding has already topped $500. My personal experience with original Blue Notes of this era is that records that look to be in VG condition, generally sound pretty darn good, so perhaps other potential buyers are hoping that is the case for this record as well.
The Paul Chambers record has the West 61sr street adress on cover.
I don t think that it is a flat edge pressing.
Good catch on the cover. Why do you think it’s not a flat-edge pressing?
i have seen this album with Lexington on cover.
It is difficullt to tell if this one has kakabushi(?) cover, mostly you can see it pretty clear when they are so old.
The viny though could be a original first pressing.
I recently bought a coppy of Clifford Brown on blue note 1526.
West 61st cover, Lexington labels deep groove and ear but not a flat edge.So my copy seem to be a later non flat edge pressing using old stock of Lexington labels. Could be the same with the Paul Chambers LP.
But you are right I am only guessing that it is not a flat edge.
Now this sunsetstripvinyl guy has Cool Struttin’ and BLP 1568 again up for sale, this time he has cropped the images from Popsike even more. I wonder how many fake listings he can come up with. I wonder how many copies of these records he think people will actually believe that he has. I wonder why none of the holy grails from February or June has any feedback left on his site. I wonder if this is the biggest scam in eBay history. Or, does he really have these records and have they reached the respective winners… why isn’t he receiving negative feedback? Why isn’t there any feedback at all for these records he’s selling. Isn’t this all very very strange!?: look at this lot of records: http://www.ebay.com/sch/sunsetstripvinyl/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686
The only two records sunsetstripvinyl sold for over $1k received negative feedback for sending empty parcels: http://toolhaus.org/cgi-bin/negs?User=sunsetstripvinyl&Dirn=Received+by&ref=home
Anyone who gives such disregard for an image and description will NERVER get a dime from me. Maybe he should just scan one letter from a given cover, awarding bonus “credits” to the top bidder who can figure out what he’s “won”? Aaron, thanks for the informative link-although I must admit, there was NEVER a question in my mind. “Let the buyer beware..”
Take a look at the Paul Chambers album cover on Popsike. An expensive one doesn’t have the names of the musicians on the front side.
This is all very sad…Someone needs to step up and report this guy.
I think that the Paul Chambers cover album was a later edition with lamination. Larry Cohn once told me this edition exists.
Indeed the 1st pressing of Paul Chambers’ “Whims of Chambers” album should have only this on the cover: “Whims of Chambers / Paul Chambers Sextet / Blue Note 1534”. From what I know, the copy that has the full line up of personnel on the front is a later edition and not a 1st pressing. I have Whims of Chambers, but only the record. I bought it for cheap without the cover. The vinyl, thankheavens, contains all the necessary details to confirm it as a first. If someone has a cover left, I’m willing to buy it for cheap 😉
Michel, You are saying that a laminated version exists with the players on the cover?
To make things a bit more clear, I have uploaded both covers to my Picasa page. If you want to see both cover versions of Whims of Chambers, then click HERE (make sure you watch in slide show mode). A true 1st pressing has the deep groove, Lex Ave address, RVG + ear hand etched in trail off, flat edge, blank spine, framed cover and is non laminated. I wouldn’t know if the second cover with all personnel on it in fact is laminated, but a true 1st pressing surely ain’t 😉
