Bidding Up – Up – Up
While the Jazz Collector community is deciding whether the Hank Mobley Blue Note 1568 is an original pressing or not, the jazz bidding community is pushing the price way up the stratosphere. As of this writing there have been twelve bids and the price is already up to $3,000. I would say that one of those bidders should just end it already and go for the $5,000 buy-it-now price — but I don’t see that option anymore. Is it possible the seller removed it? For the record, my opinion on this is that I would consider this an original pressing, based on all of the comments. It was pressed at the same time in the same press run. I never thought this was the case, but perhaps even my obsession has limits.
The same seller is going to make a small fortune this week. Check out some of these other items he has: Jutta Hipp With Zoot Sims, Blue Note 1530. This is also an original pressing and it is also described as M- unplayed condition for the record and pristine for the cover. The price is already more than $1,000 and this one still has a buy-it-now price of $5,000. Here’s another one that’s ready for the $1,000 bin already:
Dizzy Reece, Blues In Trinity, Blue Note 4006. This one is also in M- condition for the cover and M- “pristine” condition for the cover. Not to nit pick but it’s described as both unplayed and play graded, so we assume it’s been played at least once. Price on this one is already $1,000.
I think the BIN option automatically disappears after bids reach a certain level.
About the Dizzy Reece, this seems to be a fairly rare record(relative to other Blue Notes around the same time). Between my digital and analog collection I have %90 of all the Blue Notes(only %25 first pressing though). This is one I’ve never heard and have only seen for auction a small number of times. Is it any good?
If I remember the music on that rare lp is not so good. Poor high bidder! If you’re into that lp for top dollar – you can’t listen to it and you can’t make a profit selling it! Not a good place to be imo. Much rather be in that place with a Mobley or Morgan!
Or a Clark!
Isn’t the 1568 – Mobley supposed to have NEW YORK 23 to labels? Can’t remember?
zarabeth, it has two iterations that are commonly belived to be from the same run. New York 23 on one side and 47 West 63rd on both sides.
The Dizzy Reece is fine record musically IMHO.
It has been out on CD in the Mosaic Select box.
I like the Dizzy Reece album as well. It has not only been released in the Mosaic box, but also as part of the Blue Note “Connoisseur” editions. You can see the front of my copy in this photo, together with two other Dizzy Reece albums 😉
I think that’s the route I’m gonna go to grab it. I already have Star Bright and Sounding Off, both of which I enjoy. The connoisseur is like $17 on Amazon which is more than I’d like to pay but will probably grab it soon.
Another Dizzy Reece album I like is Asia Minor. Usually you can find an original for a good price relative to other New Jazz releases.
I have the UA mono press of Star Bright, which I bought for maybe $15-20 years ago. Great record but seeing as how this original went for almost $3K… (unheard of high for that one, no?)
Was Star Bright ever issued by Blue Note/Liberty/UA in stereo? Every copy I have ever seen was mono and Like you say, even the UA pressing is mono.
The Japanese CD pressing that I have of Star Bright is most certainly in stereo. It should be available in stereo on vinyl as well. Anyway, CDUniverse has all six tracks as short snippets -in stereo- online and you can listen to them HERE 😉
Well, Mike, I obtained the connoisseur CD of Blues In Trinity as a used copy by using the “these sellers” option at Amazon, but believe it or not: when the disc finally arrived it was in absolute pristine, unused and unplayed condition. The only thing was that it had this weird promo sticker on it. Apart from that it was in top notch shape. And I paid 11 bucks for it! 🙂
!!! I was referring to the JUTTA HIPP (1530) lp just for the record but I started a DIZZY thing! Yeah the DIZZY records are great. A good place to be w/ a chunk of cash. Not a JUTTA HIPP though. Can’t listen to it.
So if NEW YORK 23 is the original (on 1568) why would anyone pay so much for the non-orig?
zarabeth, it was discussed in one of the recent threads that 1568 is believed to have been pressed in only one run and both may be the original. This is a very debatable topic. I come down on the side that they are both original as I’ve seen to much evidence that shows it was all one run.
