Catching Up (In Key West): Lee Morgan, Kenny Drew

I’m posting this on a porch overlooking the beautiful, turquoise Atlantic Ocean in Key West, Fla., where I am vacationing for a couple of days. Actually, it’s a much-needed vacation for Mrs Jazz Collector and I get to go along for the ride. Anyway,  despite my adventure in paradise, I’m still keep tracking of eBay for my dear devoted followers on Jazz Collector. Here are updates on some of the items we’ve been watching, from Kenny Drew and Lee Morgan.

Kenny Drew, Undercurrent, Blue Note 4059. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing with one side DG, which I think is how this record was first produced. The record was in M- condition and the cover was VG+. The price was $631. Also from Kenny Drew was:

Kenny Drew, Walkin’ and Talkin’, Jazz West 4. This was an original pressing in what looked like VG+ condition, both the record and the cover. The price was $305.

Lee Morgan, City Lights, Blue Note 1575. This was an original pressing with the West 63rd Street address. The record was VG++ and the cover was VG++. The price was $582.70. Lee Morgan, The Cooker, Blue Note 1578. This was an original pressing in VG+ condition, both record and cover. The price was $400.

  • Nice website you have here!

Anyway had a question on Blue Note jackets. I just purchased a very nice original copy of Johnny Griffin ‘A Blowing Session’ and the cover is open on both sides. I have looked very carefully and the left side of the jacket is cleanly cut w/ no traces of a deteriorated spine. Ever see a Blue Note like this???

  • Al, I hope you and the Mrs. are enjoying some fun in the sun. Have you frequented any jazz clubs or record shops in the area?

  • Alas, there are no more record shops in this area. There are hardly any record shops anywhere, I’m sorry to say. And the only music seems to be geared towards the spring breakers, who, sadly, probably would not appreciate the genius of John Coltrane or the warmth of Hank Mobley were it to appear on a radio or iPod or jukebox anywhere in town.
