Catching Up: More Blue Notes & Prestiges

We’re updating the Jazz Collector Price Guide, and here are some odds and ends we’ve been watching:

Here’s a Blue Note you don’t see too often: Harold Vick, Steppin’ Out, Blue Note 4138. This was an original New York USA pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $373.

Someone on the Reader Forum was looking for Booker Ervin records. Could you go wrong with this one? Booker Ervin, Groovin’ High, Prestige 7417. There wasn’t much description in the listing, but there was just one bidder and the price was $9.99. This won’t make the price guide, but it probably made one collector quite happy.

The price on this also seemed a bit low: Lee Konitz, Prestige 7004. This was an original New York yellow label in VG+ condition for he record and the cover. It sold for $87.59.

Here’s a few more Blue Notes:

Baby Face Willette, Face to Face, Blue Note 4068. This was a New York USA pressing — original? — that was in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $151.30.

Duke Jordan, A Flight To Jordan, Blue Note 4046. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was in VG++ condition and the cover was somewhere between VG+ and VG++. The price was $438.

Lee Morgan, The Cooker, Blue Note 1578. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing in VG+ condition for the record and the cover. The price was $461.

  • the Lee Konitz NYC original was an original second pressing of the 7004 album.

  • Hi, Rudolf. What do you mean by original second pressing? Did that LP come out with another cover at one point? If so, I don’t recall ever seeing it.

  • Hi Al: the first pressing came out with a kakubuchi (frame cover) without spine text. The Parent photo cover was dark reddish. The second pressing had the same cover but red to violet, without kakubushi and title and cataloge number printed on the broad spine.
I am almost sure that the first issue (which I sold many years ago) had a non-laminated cover, whereas the 2nd issue has a laminated cover.
Labels: the first pressing had the lemon yellow labels with the angular letter type. The 2nd pressing had a more ochre yellow and the more round letter type one would later find on e.g. 7061, 7079, just to name some easily available catalogue numbers.

  • Hey! I am the bidder who won the Booker Ervin “Groovin’ High” LP for $9.99! The was not much description in the listing so I could not be certain of the pressing but a $10 gamble was an easy call as I wanted the music. The LP arrived today and sounds great – green label pressing – so not a screamin’ deal but still worth every penny!

  • Hey, Troy. Great record and congrats on getting it, especially at that price. Of course, I’m sure you would have preferred a blue label, but . . .
