Classic Vinyl From The Jazz Collector Era

Johnny Griffin Jazz VinylOur friends at funkyousounds are back on eBay with some nice jazz vinyl closing this week, including Johnny Griffin, The Kerry Dancers, Riverside 420. This looks to be an original blue label pressing with deep grooves. The record is listed in VG++ condition and the cover is VG. The auction closes later today and the price is in the $170 range. Donald Byrd, Fuego, Blue Note 4026. This is an original West 63rd Street deep groove pressing. The record and cover both look to be in VG+ condition. The bidding is in the $220 range with one more day to go. One more: Miles Davis, The New Miles Davis Quintet, Prestige 7014. This looks to be an original pressing with the New York hello label and the original green cover. The record is listed in VG++ condition and the cover is VG+. The price is now in the $300 range, also with one more day on the auction.

This is an interesting record, but the seller still seems to be figuring things out in terms of how to list on eBay: Dizzy Reece, Asia Minor, New Jazz 8274. This looks to be an original purple label pressing with the deep grooves. The start price is $175 and so far there are no bids. There is also a buy-it-now price of $227.50. Also, the listing says “local pick-up only” in Palm Harbor, Florida. Somehow I don’t think the seller meant to only offer local pick-up, unless there’s a hidden cult of Dizzy Reece fans in Pal Harbor, Florida that we aren’t aware of. Just a lesson to proofread your listings if you are selling on eBay.

And, as is often the case, a golden oldie from my want list: Cliff Jordan, Cliff Craft, Blue Note 1582. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing listed in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It is a relatively new listing with more than six days to go. The bidding is in the $200 range and the seller has a reserve price that hasn’t yet been me. I would expect this one to well exceed $1,000, possibly $2,000. Certainly too rich for my blood.

  • The seller of the Dizzy Reece record has a bunch more which I was looking at. I think this seller does more estate sales and is not a record dealer. Aside from the high prices…Unfortunately:
LARGE ESTATE COLLECTION. UNORTHOX I KNOW BUT WILL BE LISTING THESE AS PICK UP ONLY

  • To me, the Johnny Griffin lp was a weird one, JG boss tenor from Chicago way playing the changes of “Black is the Color, etc.”?!!! Couldn’t sell it for more than $20.00 back in the day and though myself lucky when I did. Oh well, guess I made my move too soon. Should have held on to it.

  • just shy of $500 for the Kerry Dancers?!

  • oh, whoops, misread – $435, not $495. Still… seems high.

As a Florida resident, I am a member of the Dizzy Reece cult down here…lol. I contacted the seller of the Dizzy about some other lp’s he had on Craigslist. The prices were a little high but I was most concerned about condition, which I feared may be overgraded. I made him a reasonable offer on a couple to see how flexible he was as I didn’t want to waste a trip.
I backed away even though I’m within driving distance. He means it: Pick up only…

  • ha, that’s brutal.

dang, terry, are they not good, or did you get weird vibes from the dude?

please do not bid on any funkyousounds auctions as I have my eye on two essentials for completing my impulse catalog. thank you all. 😉

    haha.

  • First, thanks for all the great information here. I am the novice from florida , and yes these are an estate find. Terry and I have corresponded through ebay. I thanked him for pointing out errors I had on a few riverside albums . I don’t want any misunderstandings on condition or pressings so for now they are ” pickup only “. I realize this may be futile but will have to be for now for my sake and buyers sake. Terry I think you would be happy with condition but I realize it is too far to drive to find out. Thanks , Ken
