eBaying: Alto Madness & A Pair of Blue Notes
Here’s some nice jazz vinyl that’s been sold on eBay recently, while we’ve been offline and packing.
Jackie McLean and John Jenkins, Alto Madness, Prestige 7114. This was an original yellow label pressing with the New York address. It was sold by Euclid Records and was listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. What a beauty. It sold for $812, a relatively high price for a Prestige of this vintage, but who can argue at this kind of value for a record of this quality in this condition.
Here’s an interesting one: Cliff Jordan, Cliff Craft, Blue Note 1582. This was an original pressing. The seller didn’t actually grade it, but gave some information about the condition, so we get to determine the grading ourselves. There was some surface noise on two tracks of this LP, one of which the seller described as “unpleasant.” The highest grade it would get in our view would be VG+. The more likely grade would be VG. What do you think? The cover looked to be VG++. The price was $676, which would reflect more of a VG+ grading than a VG grading, don’t you think?
This one came from a seller with only three feedbacks, so it’s a little risky, right?
Johnny Griffin Volume 2, Blue Note 1559. This was described as an original pressing and the condition wasn’t clear in the description. The cover looked to be VG and I would guess the record was VG+, but who knows. Still, someone was willing to spend $670 on this record despite all of the risks.
interesting price for a rare Prestige. Some albums from 7110 on, to roughly 7120, were often printed in one run only, without second pressings, or later re-issues on NJ/Status.
7114, 7115, 7116, 7117 and 7119 exist only in NYC pressings and I have reasons to believe that the total number issued of each of these is limited.
7115 and 7116 were on Esquire, the others not.
If the word “unpleasant” is in the description, I quickly become concerned. I would say VG. VG+ should have light noise which I wouldn’t use a term such as “unpleasant” to describe. I would say, “not distracting surface noise” or something. I do applaud the seller for the honesty though.
Just found this. Thought it to be important to fans: http://vimeo.com/12192828
thanks, very interesting.
I loved it.
@zarabeth47 – that video of Jackie McLean on Mars was terrific…thx for posting. Watching Jeter get 3000 today and that video made for a great afternoon
I’m not a Yankee fan-go Boston(AL) and Mets(NL)!-but that was a heck of a game. 5 for 5,the game winner…a hell of a player. Too bad he’s a Yankee(lol). Incidentally,I once had an original copy of Alto Madness which I foolishly traded to Leon Levitt for a bag of peanuts around 1977. This was before words like “value” and “Prestige” were used in the same sentence…remember?
That Johnny Griffin is now relisted as “Lp is VG+ The Records is VG++” whatever that means.
Thanks Zarabeth for posting that video. Pretty cool.
