eBaying: Overseas, Boats and Blue Notes

Lots of jazz vinyl to watch on eBay, as usual. Here are a few of the ones we’re watching:

I’ve never owned an original pressing of this: Tommy Flanagan Overseas, Prestige 7134. Aside from the regular availability of this record on eBay, I’ve only had a couple of chances to actually hold this record in my hand and pay cash for it. Once, the price was just too high and the second time was a few years ago, I had a chance to buy a collection and this was one of the records. The whole collection was probably about $3,000 and I could have made up a good portion of it by just selling this record, but there weren’t enough other gems to make it worthwhile. I’m still looking for a copy and expect to find one someday at a reasonable price, but this won’t be the one. This one is in VG+ condition for both the record and the vinyl and is already at $1,180. I see that the seller is located near me, so, if you’re out there and a reader, perhaps we can do some trading one of these days.

My son graduated from his masters program at Brown so I don’t get up to Providence as much as I used to, but I see my friend Steve at Round Again Records has found a nice collection and is posting some of them on eBay, including these gems:

Curtis Fuller, The Opener, Blue Note 1567. This one is in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It is closing in a little more than a day and is already close to $550. I’ve told this story before, but I had a copy of this record and sold it to help finance the purchase of a boat. The boat sank and I’ve never replaced this record, nor a few others I sold for the boat, including Jackie’s Pal, Lee Morgan Candy, a couple of Lou Donaldson and Clifford Brown 10-inch Blue Notes, and a few others too painful to mention. Oh well. No more selling records for boats. Also from Round Again: Gil Melle, Patterns in Jazz, Blue Note 1517. This looks to be an original Lexington Avenue pressing with the kakubushi cover. The record is in VG++ condition and the cover is VG+. The current price is around $400. Finally, there is Lee Morgan, City Lights, Blue Note 1575. This is another original pressing. The record is VG++ but the cover has water damage and is only VG minus. The bidding is currently in the $240 range.

  • Some great Blue Notes, painful boat story 😉

On another note, dear Jazz aficionados, did you all read this horrible story about the <a href="William Savory Collection“>William Savory Collection, recently acquired by the National Jazz Museum in Harlem? Thanks to pre-historic US copyright laws we might as well forget about it. Read the story, there’s some amazing stuff to read there, especially about the artists that Savory recorded. Unique stuff, sad to read an article like that. 🙁

  • And here is the active link, sorry: William Savory Collection

  • Matty, thanks for the very informative link. The whole “orphan works” topic is incredibly complicated. I missed the listening sessions the SMH held some months back-hopefully,that wasn’t my last shot!

  • I gotcha, Ceedee. Let’s hope that in the nearby future it won’t take a listening session to hear these gems, but that the music will simply be available to the public. It’s absolutely lovely to check out the Savory page of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, ’cause you don’t want to miss this fantastic video plus a great amount of audio snippets! Let’s hope this ‘orphan works’ b.s. finds a solution first. Material that has been rotting away for almost 80 years should be immediately taken out of the whole copyright thing and released publicly before it is lost forever.
