Explorations in the Jazz Collector Stratosphere
Time to clear out the watch list, starting with The Arrival of Kenny Dorham, Jaro, JAM 5007. This was an original mono pressing with the blue label and deep grooves. The record and cover were both listed in EX+ condition. The final price was about $1,248. From what I can see on Popsike, this is a new high for this record, beating the pervious top tag of $1,050. Speaking of new highs, I had to do a double-take on this one: Get Happy With Freddie Redd Trio With Guests, Nixa Jazz Today Series, NJL 19. We wrote about that a few weeks ago and the post received 59 comments (and counting). At the time of the writing the bidding was in the $460 range and there was some speculation that would end up in the $1,000 bin. How about the $4,000 bin, as in $4,377.
While we’re in the stratosphere: Sonny Clark Trio, Blue Note 1579. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was listed in VG++ condition and the cover was probably VG++ based on the pictures. The final price was $2,370. Johnny Griffin. The Congregation, Blue Note 1580. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing with the Andy Warhol cover. The record was in VG++ condition and the cover was VG+. The final price was $1,593. Wardell Gray Memorial, Volume 2, Prestige 7009. This was an original New York yellow label pressing. The record and cover were in VG+ condition. The final price was $1,246. Tommy Flanagan Overseas, Prestige 7134. This was an original New York yellow label. The record was VG+ and the cover was VG. The final price was $3,450. Whew. I’m out of breath just typing in these numbers. Must be the atmosphere pressure in the stratosphere.
Wouldn’t pressure in the stratosphere be lower?
Seriously, though, surely we must apply some of the “blame” for that Freddie Redd to the buzz generated here, yes? The halo effect from his Blue Note stuff?
Well, obviously, collecting certain records/labels has become an adventure in who has the most money. And most likely folks at eBay are happy, as they’re taking around 15% of the sale price, good old “buyer’s premium.”
Some buy prices not records…don’t forget we are talking about “holy grails” lol ?.
Maybe Carlos Gohoos81 buy all of them…
vinyl-house-uk always seems to get premium prices (and well deserved according to the feedback). I thought that would change a bit with Brexit though. Personally I hesitate to buy from UK now since the costs add up with VAT and import fees, but maybe the domestic market in UK is big enough to keep the numbers up.
There are not many Post-bop Eurojazz titles, and they tended to be pressed in low numbers. Add the nice clean condition of this record, and the price starts to make more sense.
I meant to say post-bop Eurojazz titles from the 50’s. Titles from the 60’s are a good bit more plentiful.
Michel, tienes razón. Yo, Carlos, he comprado todos los discos de vinilo.
?? ??? ? ?? ?????? ???? ??? ?????
He truly sucks.

Thank you JOK. Thanks to you and Google, I now know how to say prick in Arabic..
JOK, you are definitely a native speaker…LOL . Pretty clever, pretty clever….recycling jokes again. What is it with you old men and cognitive impairment? Is there universal cognitive decline among those attempting to use clever rejoinders or are you simply living out your limited days left in the bliss of advanced rapidly advancing frontotemporal dementia? For a half deaf 70 year old, you still aren’t the sharpest tool in the shed…tsk tsk.
At least i still have mental faculties available to me… Oh shit… You forgot where you put your keys again! 8th time this morning!
This is super lame, but it needs to be said. Lay down your weapons. I will not fight a battle of wits with unarmed/demented/cognitively impaired/vulnerable senior When I will probably get arrested for elder abuse just based on the comments I make in this form.
Narcistic much, asshole?
JOK, please do not feed the trolls. Unfed, they usually go elsewhere. If that fails, get a billy goat.
