My point was not to diminish Madlib; rather to highlight that he in included early in a remaster series that is touted as covering “the jewels of the Blue Note catalog.” Good on Madlib, but his album is not a “jewel” of the greatest jazz catalog of all time! It’s just a way to get the brand out. Which is fine, truly. In fact, I’m happy to see New Moon Daughter included, and only hope they will eventually include Kurt Elling – Live in Chicago. But it’s such an annoying marketing effort to try and create a non-existent equivalent between new product and classic, already-beloved product. But, small price to pay if the reissues sound any good1

The Madlib album is obviously the “outsider” Joe L’s referring to, but for those unfamiliar, he’s one of the most innovative and respected hip-hop producers over the past decade. His “Shades of Blue” album (2003) is a re-working of some of Blue Note’s “funkier” albums in the late 60s/70s.

The Kallax seems to be entirely based on cost-cutting and the use of less wood. I have five 2×4 Expedits and I doubt I will need another. And if I do, Kallax seems like it will be fine.
