The author makes some good points regarding an issue we have all contemplated at one time or another.

I moved my collection just about 2yrs ago. I took the time to box, transport, unpack and alphabetize my everything. In doing so, I essentially went through every record I have; about 2k. I came to the conclusion that my collection is much more valuable than I thought, and I have contemplated an insurance policy.... Even indie pop LPs from the 90's are now worth $50-$100 as first pressings in mint condition. My collection is about 50% vintage jazz (plenty of Blue Note and Prestige titles) and Rock (plenty of mint and NM first pressings from the 60's- now Beatles Parlophone, Stones UK, Who Track, UK and Japanese pressings of punk, new wave, indie etc). I don't know how many times in the recent past I have pulled out a record to play, then looked at one of the online sales data sites and discovered that the LP is now worth $200-$300-$500+.

All of the above has caused me to think about the nature of collecting and when does ownership of a collection cross over from a hobby, to becoming like a conservator-ship or even an investment asset ? It has also made me think about new collectors entering the market, driving up prices, but having no real interest or emotional attachment to the music. Their interest is pure trend capturing, or hunting the next trophy to put on the wall. My worst fear is I die first and my wife sells my collection for what I told her I paid....

I think the key here is "mono" as it tends to be more difficult to find in excellent condition, and of course the reputation of the seller. Personally, I would have preferred clearer and larger pictures of the labels and cover. The later is surprisingly easy to do using a current spec cellphone.

The sellers's system is of sufficient quality to discern the difference between a DMM pressing and an early pressing. Certainly improvements in equipment will likely translate into greater audible resolution, but the inherent differences in pressings should be audible even with a modest system.

Dimitri-- Just saw your comment. Thank you for your feedback. I agree with your statements regarding the lp. I did not mention DG or First Press with that lp. Best wishes for your collecting in 2018.

Shaft-- I spent hours making certain that I had every detail correct on these lp's. While Jackie's Bag was super heavy, first press address, & "Review Copy" stamped, it does not have the DG like the other two-- (DG= the wide groove beneath the paper label in the middle, as I understood it). I will let the experts make sense of what that means. I can tell you it is clean & plays pristine. Every detail on these records is conservative.

Dimitri, the OLD word you used in describing Daryl's system is irrelevant.

My System comprises of Tannoy Monitor Golds dpeaker drivers from the early 1960's
a Vintage Ortofon MC SPU, a Vintage Garrard 401 deck with SME 3012 arm from the 1960's some vintage Valve amps (Tubes to you guys)...
and let me tell you my man, it can extract everything and more you describe!

But i agree with the message you are getting across regarding reissues..
That said, there are some mighty fine reissues out there..at a premium
