Jazz For A Snowy Day

Hard to believe, but it’s actually snowing here in New York. A perfect day to take a look at what’s on eBay.

Be still my heart: One of the top priorities on my want list, but the price . . . . Lou Donaldson, Quartet, Quintet, Sextet, Blue Note 1537. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing and it looks to be in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. It is now priced at $560 and it will close sometime today, probably in the plus-$1,000 range. Too much for me. I have a Japanese pressing of this record and it’s always been a favorite, “If I Love Again,” mmmmmm. Anyone out there who has a spare, I have some good stuff to trade.

How about a couple of Blue Notes with Andy Warhol covers: Kenny Burrell, Blue Lights Volume One, Blue Note 1596. This is described as an original pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The current price is $520 with just about an hour to go. And, if you want to buy it’s brother: Kenny Burrell, Blue Lights Volume 2, Blue Note 1597. This is from the same seller, it is described as being in the same M- condition as the other one and it is also at $520. Also from the same seller is this beauty: Lou Donaldson, Sunny Side Up, Blue Note 4036. This is an original pressing with the original cover. It is listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover and is currently priced at $338.

  • Al: I sold a NM copy of 1537, Lex Ave, flat rim, a while ago. It did NOT fetch top dollars ( under 1000 ). I wonder for how much this one will go.
I sold mine since I have the three ten inchers. 1537 is incomplete.

  • 1537 also shows the divercity of Reid Miles’ artist quality… beautifull, almost picasso -like;)

  • Got to love that Reid Miles cover on 1537 as well Al… An all round great LP for an otherwise snowy day ! (I’m just sitting here with a latte and listening to WBGO myself… Definitely a great ebay weekend !)

  • The and the 1596 and 4036 are No DG. Not originals.

  • And of course, not original labels.

  • @ Rudolf: the LP version of 1537 is incomplete, but its counterpart on CD contains all titles of the preceding ten inchers:

    1. Roccus (alt. take)
    2. Roccus
    3. Cheek To Cheek (alt. take)
    4. Lou’s Blues (alt. take)
    5. Lou’s Blues
    6. Cheek To Cheek
    7. The Things We Did Last Summer
    8. Sweet Juice
    9. Down Home
    10. The Best Things In Life Are Free
    11. If I Love Again
    12. Caracas
    13. The Stroller
    14. Moe’s Bluff
    15. After You’ve Gone

    Tracks 1-7:
Lou Donaldson (as) Horace Silver (p) Gene Ramey (b) Art Taylor (d)
WOR Studios, NYC, June 20, 1952

    Tracks 8-11:
Blue Mitchell (tp) Lou Donaldson (as) Horace Silver (p) Gene Ramey (b) Arthur Taylor (d)
WOR Studios, NYC, November 19, 1952

    Track 12-15:

    Correct, right?

    -Matty 😉

  • re: the Mobley 1568 etc. check out the feedback left for others from the winner. he left 10 straight negative feedbacks for 5-6 different sellers. none of these sellers have any any other negatives. at that price he has every right to be picky, but I have to wonder what are his complaints (and with both of them)?.

  • Thanks for the link Michel… are there any lessons learnt for us collectors? Poor guy from Korea …

  • @ Bill : Yes i’ve noticed that , too. Who knows ? A bit of a complainer, who buys top end collectable only ? or the guy who wants a rebate ? Or overgraded records ?

  • Maarten: there is no doubt that the cover art of # 1537 is one of Reid’s best.
This raises the question whether one should keep records on your shelves for their cover art only. I collected for a long time DSM covers, but am now considering to sell off my JATP and other Clef/Norgran material, despite the superior DSM art work. If one does not listen to the music, and if one does not exhibit the covers on the wall, there is only one logical solution, sell.
Mattyman: thanks for this very interesting info. I did not know about this CD.
Michel: I had a few deals with this So.Korean buyer, they were without problems.

  • At Rudolf: you’re welcome. And, if I’m correct, The Best Things In Life Are Free was not part of any of the 10 inchers 😉
