Jazz Vinyl Countdown: Jackie For Sale

We had mentioned seeing this record on eBay the other day: Jackie McLean Consequence, Blue Note King GFX-8172. This is a 1965 record that was not issued in the United States and was, in fact, issued on this Japanese pressing for the first time. It’s a nice record featuring Jackie with Lee Morgan, Harold Mabern, Herbie Lewis, Billy Higgins. The first track, Bluesanova, is slightly Sidewinder-like and there’s a nice medium tempo version of My Old Flame. We didn’t realize it was a valuable collectible until we saw the copy on eBay at more than $100: It eventually sold for $185.50. That copy was in M- condition for both the record and the cover. Our copy is M- for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover (there’s a little wear around the edges). In any case, we are going to try something a little different with this record: We are going to

offer it for sale here on the Jazz Collector site and not put it on eBay. It is an experiment we have tried a couple of times before, with moderate success. We would like to do this more often — to give our loyal readers an opportunity to purchase collectibles that are not necessarily available to the general public. In any case, since the price of this is established at about $185, we would happily sell our copy to a Jazz Collector reader for $140. We have just the one copy so when it’s gone it’s gone. We’ll give it about two weeks to sell before we pull it down and offer it on eBay. If you purchase it here on the site, our normal shipping fees apply: $4 in the United States; $15 to Europe and $17 to Asia. Good luck.

  • Is the Cat. No. GXF or GXK? To the best of my knowledge GXF no.s begin 30** & the GXKs 81**. Also I think this is one of the titles released in 1980-81, after the LT pressing of 1979. Still a fair price, only wish I could afford it as I’m particularly fond of King pressings & often they’re bargains compared to originals… are those Japan pressings you just acquired King or Toshiba?

  • It is GXK. I copied it from the other listing. Good catch. Thanks. The ones I just acquired are Toshibas.
