Jazz Vinyl Update: Jackie, Mobley, Burrell, Warhol

Here are some recent jazz vinyl sales that we somehow missed. This one is among the rarest of the rare and collectors seem to covet it regardless of condition: Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601. This one was in VG condition for the vinyl and VG- for the cover. It sold for $688.

Hank Mobley, Mobley’s Message, Prestige 7061. This was an original pressing with the New York address. The record was in VG++ condition and the cover was VG++ as well. The price was $665. I remember this as one of the few collectibles for which I paid top-dollar at Dayton’s back in the early 1980s. In those days, top dollar for this was about $80, and psychologically, that was a tough hump to get over for me, but I spent it. Then, I wound up selling it a few years later for about $200 and my copy now is a Japanese pressing.

I would have thought this next one would have fetched a lot more money, but the listing was a little confusing and the condition of the cover wasn’t described:

Kenny Burrell, Blue Note 1543. This looked to be an original Lexington Avenue pressing and it has the cover by Andy Warhol. With Warhol covers, it’s important to talk about the condition. This is the last of the Blue Notes with the Lexington Avenue address, right? The record looked to be in VG++ condition based on the description. The price was $565.55. Not bad.

  • Does anyone out there happen to know the story behind Ad Lib Records ? It seems to be one of those lesser known labels… The only other title I’ve ever seen was a 10″ LP called “Billy Bauer – Let’s Have a Session”.

Never the less, there certainly is a really wide margin in terms of selling price on this one depending on the condition compared to the other coveted LP’s on the market…

  • Inthink Ad Lib has some connection to Jubilee right?

  • Mike: I don’t think so. What are your reasons for this supposition?
The Bauer and McLean are the only ones I know to exist on Ad Lib.

  • I thought this because I have “The complete Jubilee Sessions” on CD and it contains the Ad Lib session. So I always assumed that Ad Lib was bought by Jubilee. That’s all the evidence I have though, never seen any other info about it.

  • Mike: you may be right since the Ad Lib McLean album was re-issued on Jubilee LP JGM-1064.

  • After I answered the question I searched the internet for a while on any information on Ad Lib. I essentially found nothing except that the Bauer and McLean records where released. So the only other bit I know is that The New Tradition session was re-issued through Jubilee. I wish I knew more.

  • I have some related info: Jubilee issued a 1950 Bennie Green session on Jubilee EP 15008 (with Budd Johnson and Roy Haynes). I sold this EP for good money to Japan. I had the impression though that this Jubilee EP had no relation to the later Jubilee LP issues. I base myself on the different adress and packaging, but may be wrong.
