John Coltrane Vinyl For the Ages
Back to our life’s mission of watching rare jazz vinyl on eBay. For some reason this morning I noticed several of the Red Garland Prestige records with John Coltrane. These are nice records and can still be purchased for reasonable prices. The exception is Prestige 7123, which is a Coltrane date and is typically one of the higher priced Prestiges, particularly with the original cover. Speaking of 7123: John Coltrane with the Red Garland Trio, Prestige 7123. This is an original New York pressing and this is the original cover. It was later issued as Traneing In with another cover. This one is in M- condition for the record and probably VG+ or maybe a little better for the cover. The price is already more than $250 and there are still four days left on the auction.
I noticed two copies of this one:
The Red Garland Quintet, Soul Junction, Prestige 7181. This is an original pressing with the yellow label and New Jersey address. The record is listed in M- condition and the cover is probably VG++. The price is now in the $180 range with more than four days to go. Here’s another copy of this record, this one in possibly VG++ condition for the record and the cover, although it’s not quite clear. There is one bid on this record at $225 and there are more than two days left.
While we’re on Trane, there’s this: John Coltrane, Blue Train, Blue Note 1577. This is listed as an original but, as we all know, original is in the eye of the beholder. The most valuable copies of Blue Train have the New York 23 label on one side. Does this copy? Can’t tell from the picture (at least, I can’t tell) and no one has publicly asked the question, so it’s a tossup. The record seems to be in M- condition and the cover could be M- or close to M-, but the seller didn’t do himself any favors with the pictures he posted. This one closes later today and the bidding is just over $800.
I was watching that Blue Train as well. I wouldn’t care if my copy had the New York 23 label on one side or not, but I also wouldn’t pay a premium for what may be a second pressing.
Here’s another one that appears to be a “second” pressing that went for big bucks:

Workout is a great record, but I don’t understand the prices it demands. Is it particularly rare?
Al, i think the Blue Train is not the coveted NY23 label.
GST : no, Workout is not particularily rare, it pop up many times on Ebay, but it is Mobley and it is Blue Note. And it is one of his finest sessions. And it is sold by Atomic Records. You have the right combination for a bidding war.
By the way here’s another war that ended up with a big battle : http://www.ebay.fr/itm/301128692864?clk_rvr_id=606812135215
I did participe to the war…bidded 415. Needless to say i was dead long before peace came back. 🙂
And the Blue Train went for 3000 $. And its not a NY 23. What else to say ?
Time to cash in.
