New Year’s Vinyl, One More Time

I’m clearing out whatever backlog I have in my watch list, so I can start the year fresh. This one is from back in November: Dave Burns, Vanguard 9111. This was an original mono, promo record with deep grooves and  white label. The record and cover were both listed in M- condition. The final price was $166. I’m not exactly sure why I was watching this or even saved it for so long, but I can guess that I was wondering how much longer an album like this can remain of interest to collectors? Vanguard was not a premium label and Burns was not a premium artist, although he always accorded himself well on recordings and in live performances, when I had the rare opportunity to see him play. There still seems to be demand for his two original Vanguard LPs, based on Popsike results, so I guess part of the question answers itself: Yes, there is still demand. For how long? Anyone’s guess.

I saved this one because I am unclear about the cover: Sonny Rollins, Blue Note 1542. This one has the Lexington Avenue address on the labels, but the West 63rd Street address on the jacket, plus the jacket is sideways, unless the person taking the picture put it the wrong way. So my guess is that this is a second pressing, even though it has the original Lexington Avenue labels. To my recollection this was the next to last of the Blue Note 1500 series that had the Lexington labels, so it could have been in the transition when there were spare labels lying around????? Anyway, I do have a story about this record because I actually had a third copy until yesterday afternoon and now I “only” have two. Give me a few days to prepare the story and I will be happy to share it. Anyway, this one was in VG+ condition for the record and VG for the cover. It sold for $687.

  • Blp 1542 looks like a2nd press (beaded edge Lexington). Reverse frame cover, looks like beaded rim. New is facing vertical, you can tell based on position of yellow stripe on rear cover with respect to text. W 63rd no INC addy on rear cover is consistent with 1st &/or 2nd press.

  • If you look at the cover of the Sonny Rollins, there is tape visible on the front left seam, but notice when the back cover is shown, the tape is actually on the bottom seam. So yes, the cover was just turned in the front image by the seller.

  • Not to mention the yellow stripe on the cover! ; )

  • As far as I’m concerned, the Dave Burns record was a steal. Clean condition, relatively rare record, a somewhat obscure artist, unusual label (for jazz), solos, nice tunes and arrangements- these are exactly the things a real jazz record collector should covet. I have hundreds of records that fill these criteria, and I am proud to say so. Records like these separate the wolves from the sheep.

  • This Dave Burns is a fine session. Its rare, has a nice cover and fine recording. If it was on Blue Note, the hipster crowd would consider it. But on Vanguard, you have only two bids and a reasonnable price Two connoisseurs !

  • I have the same 1542 Rollins with Lex/Lex lbls and 63rd adress on cover. The cover has Rollins in vertical position.
I had a second issue 47W63rd labels and 61st adress on cover. This one had Rollins horizontal.

  • the cover with rollins horizontal is a visual war crime, if you ask me.

  • Damn, wish I had seen that Burns! Someone got a deal.

  • Burns might not have been a deal. Just about every record for the Burns seller is graded NM. Little suspicious. The Burns also appears to have been sold and returned since Oct 20 if you check the seller’s previous sales.

  • Good spot PD. Definite cause for concern.

  • Best to the New Year for all.

Ok so not a Blue Note , Prestige , Riverside BUT ……One Record I just threw on and have not played in a long time.

The Return Of Art Pepper – Jazz West JWLP-10

My copy is a original copy, but a bit on the rough side , still very playable.

    Great Jazz LP.

  • Top of the Morning…
I know some people consider Herbie Mann not to be tops in the Jazz Department, but I really like “Flute Flight” with Bobby Jaspar – Prestige 7124

  • I have some Herbie Manns that really date back. That is, as far as you can date back with Herbie Mann as considering some of the other artist you guys are speaking about, Herbie Mann is a pup…. Love that flute

  • Good news everyone… I listed Bohemia After Dark featuring Julian “Cannonball” Adderly my with Horace Silver, Paul Chambers, Donald Byrd, Nat Adderly, Jerome Richardson, and Kenny Clark, Leader (Savoy. MG 12017) on eBay with bidding starting at $250 and got an offer in the first hour, moving me into the $300 bin. Excited and impetuous, I’m ready to take it. But this is a bid right? Bidding doesn’t end for another 48 hrs. Be patient right? I love the album cover and would love to hear the session with these jazz giants. As the liner notes read “Very few re-takes were made, because the spirited session seemed to ‘take right off’ and stay that way” but alas, as the LP is sealed, its not meant for me to be but only for the lucky buyer only…
One album I am enjoying immensely is Green Street featuring Grant Green, Ben Tucker, bass Dave Bailey, drums. Blue Note, 4071 (blue/white label, 43 West 61st Street). I haven’t listed on eBay because it is not sealed, and cover VG+. The album itself is VG++ and my whole family is enjoying listening to it as I’ve been playing the LP non-stop. Grant’s trio does a superb version of ‘Round About Midnight. Not veering away from the tune keeping it close to Miles Davis but just adding a little twist to lemon. Beautiful! Not for sale

  • However…. Not to leave you high and dry, I will post the LP cover with excerpts from the liner notes on Instagram @wilsrecodshop and be sure to include it when the website
