On eBay: Getz, Anita O’Day, Sonny Clark(e)

Speak of the devil, here’s a copy of Stan Getz Plays, Norgran, 1042, on eBay now courtesy of our friends at Euclid Records. The record is listed in M- condition and the cover is VG++ and the words “beautiful” and “gorgeous” are thrown in as well. The price is around $140 and there are still more than two days to go.

Don’t usually expect to see this one at $100 or more, but this copy is there already: Anita O’Day Sings the Most, Verve 8259. This is an original pressing with the trumpeter logo and it is in M- condition.

If someone is doing a search of Sonny Clark, will this record come up:

Sonny Clark, Dial S For Sonny, Blue Note 1570? Why do we ask? The listing has the artist as Sonny Clarke, with an “e” at the end. Will this impact the bidding? Doubt it, although the price is low so far. The record is listed as VG++ and the price is in the $80 range with some time to go. There are no pictures of the labels, which you would normally expect for a vintage Blue Note from an experienced seller, so that may be a little off-putting to some bidders.  We’ll see. A VG- copy of Sonny’s Crib, Blue Note 1576, is selling in about two hours and is a little bit more than $100.

  • The sellers of the Sonny Clarke (sic) LP were the same ones who got (a new high I believe) $2011 for Hank Mobley 1550 in spite of sparse detail/photos, plus a few other +$1000 bin BNs, inc a VG++ copy of Sonny’s Crib @ $1026. Some may not have quite reached the maxed out prices of late due to a listing heading such as “SONNY CLARK LP Sonny’s Crib Blue Note DG mono nyc”, i.e. stating ‘nyc’ instead of ’47W63′; I nearly skipped past them for that reason.

  • Al,all this begs the following question-Does your “heads up” reporting of these errors help those readers/potential bidders by pointing us in the right direction,or just ensure that the fiekd may become more crowded? (Who among us hasn’t relished a win due to an error in a listing?) And,of course,if you’re trying to score an lp at a reasonable price a ‘crowd’ is the LAST thing you want! More importantly, how does it work when YOU mention something you’d like to bid on “that’s ending soon” only to be outbid at the last second by a reader of The Jazz Collector? I don’t know that it’s happened, but why wouldn’t it? What’s your take on it? Ah..”Ethics,Existentialism and The Art of Record Collecting:The Futility of Fullfillment”. Sounds like a 3-credit course to me-Professor?
