On Ebay: Lou, Lou & Some Wailers

Here is some of the jazz vinyl we’ve been watching this weekend:

Lou Donaldson, Quartet, Quintet, Sextet, Blue Note 1537. This was an original Lexington Avenue flat-edge pressing. It was listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The price was $1,008.80. Rudolph asks if perhaps there is a slowdown. We have seen this sell for more than $1,800 recently, so who knows. I find so much of what happens on eBay arbitrary: Depends who’s looking that week, how competitive the bidding gets, how the record is listed, who does the listing, etc. Here’s another Donaldson: Lou Takes Off, Blue Note 1591. This was a bit of a strange

listing because the seller didn’t offer much in the way of details: The headline said VG++, but not sure if that referred to the vinyl or cover or both, and the listing didn’t mention deep grooves or ears or RVGs, although there was some information in the questions. No way to know if this was an original. It was in shrink wrap, but not sure if that provides a clue. Anyway, it sold for $230.50. If it’s an original the buyer will be happy, if not, then there will probably be a return. This is another one that usually sells for a higher price: Art Taylor, Taylor’s Wailers, Prestige 7117. This seemed to be an original pressing — although there was no photo of the label — and it was listed in VG++ condition for the vinyl and VG+ for the cover. It sold for $274.99.

  • Lou 1591:back cover with INC.To my knowledge the first inc cover should be 4013,J McLean and the first record 4017 H Silver.
This is the way a record should’t be described unless you wanna sell reissues for originals.
Lou 1537 perfectly and totallly detailed.
That’s the way I love a record to be descibed.Useless to say we all know who the seller is…

  • grazie dottore!

  • super info dottorjazz, was always only checking 47 or 43 west on the back… but never the ‘INC’

  • 1537: i could never afford a price like this, but this buyer must be unbelievably happy (im talking sniffin’ it, talking to it and even caressing it.. (i say: In a really heavy mood Crying to it!)…) …this one looks like NEW. One of the most beautifull covers of reid miles. Should have gotten more R.

  • I’m confused right now, because when I look at the 1537 record, I can see all the details. But there is no evidence, that the seller put on the information later. So what’s it all about? Do you see the same?

  • later info for 1591 (page bottom)
Questions and answers about this item
Q: Hello Is there R mark(trade mark) on bottom of both label? Is there “ear” mark on dead wax? Best
A: Here is my assessment of the record: (1) deep groove on both sides (2) definite “ear” on one side (3) half of “ear” on the other — Is that your “R”?
