On eBay: Some 10-Inch Blue Note Beauties
I bought those three James Moody 10-inch Prestige records and have gotten into a 10-inch head this past week. I reorganized my 10-inch LPs and did what Rudolf does for some of them, organizing them by label rather than by artist. It was cool doing this with the Prestiges because I never realized before how many I had. But it was disappointing with the Blue Notes, because it made me feel like I wanted more. Then I looked at eBay and saw a couple of real beauties for sale, including:
Miles Davis Volume 2, Blue Note 5022. This one is M- for the record and at least VG++ for the cover and the picture looks absolutely pristine. What a beauty. The price is already more than $300 and it is not going to find a place on my shelf. This one is from the same seller and looks equally appealing: Clifford Brown, New Star on the Horizon, Blue Note 5032. Same deal as the Miles: M- vinyl, beautiful cover, incredible crystal clear picture. It’s also more than $300 with more than a day to go.
Also on eBay now is an auction from the Jazz Record Center including:
Booker Ervin, That’s It!, Candid 8014. This is an original pressing in M- condition. It’s at more than $200. The Resurgence of Dexter Gordon, Jazzland 29. This is an original orange label pressing in M- condition. I’ve never understood why this wasn’t treated as more of a collectible. It’s Dexter right before Blue Note and it’s an original Jazzland pressing, not a Riverside reissue. This one is at $75, which is higher than usual for this record. It’s also a terrific record.
Al,that Miles(Vol.2) is a favorite of mine, too! I’ve never heard an original pressing of ‘Tempus Fugit’,but if that’s not THE bop anthem,I don’t know what is-Blakey at his best! Classic cover, too. On the other hand,I had the Dexter on Jazzland long ago and unloaded it quickly. I thought it was terrible! As I recall,Dexter seemed in a “haze”,to be kind, and the sidemen-and their performances- pedestrian. Maybe time will treat the session more kindly, but I think of the date as strictly transitional. Long Tall was working his way back after his prison stay, and still throwing off his personal demons..one day at a time.
The Miles and Clifford Brown records are being sold by the same outfit that is doing those excellent audiophile 45rpm Blue Note reissues.
Hmm, I should have noticed that since they do advertise here on the site. Maybe I should have worked out a barter deal.
Al: congratulations on the acquisition of the Moody’s on Prestige. I started early with my collection of 10″ Blue Notes. I found the uniform art work of the early 10″ Prestige albums a bit boring. Later on they produced some very fine albums, esp. the six New Jazz albums which are fantastic.
